MIAKA Suing Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Citing Discrimination
MIAKA’s to file discrimination lawsuit against Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority
There may be a big lawsuit in preparation against the oldest and most renowned sorority founded for African American women.
Men interested in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, also known as MIAKAs, are threatening to file a lawsuit against Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., a sorority founded at Howard University on Jan. 15, 1908. The group of men, whom all are homosexual, are alleging homophobia and gender discrimination by the sorority.
News of MIAKAs first surfaced a couple years ago when men founded an unofficial chapter of AKA at Texas Southern University and Prairie view A&M.
Members of the Greek community were shocked when the Tri Alpha Chapter of MIAKI presented photos of men adorned in pink and green and pearls, while throwing up their “pinkies.” People were even more shocked to learn the chapter had even filmed a probate show with sounds of the sorority’s famous call “skee wee” being heard in the background.
As the world is becoming more accepting of the LGBT community, MIAKAs may have a legitimate case. On Wed. May 9, Barack Obama made history by becoming the first president to officially endorse same-sex marriage.
We’re not too sure how we feel about this one. Is it homophobic and discriminatory for Alpha Kappa Alpha to deny homosexual men from joining? Sound off below.
How fcuking ignorant. They could just form their own damn fraternity or sorority.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is for FEMALES only. Thats the way its always been and it should stay that way.
And White people are allowed and some do attend HBCU's; I went to one and there were White students.
Oh really? Well, the more you know! I just constantly hear complaints about it where I live, so that's where that analogy came from. I guess I shouldn't trust the intelligence of people complaining about things like that.

LOL! Yeah, it's ok. A lot of people outside of the Black American community don't understand the history behind HBCU's and why they exist in the first place.
All of them were started post-slavery/Jim Crow era when Black people weren't allowed to go to White schools; so Black people had no choice but to start their own if they wanted an education. Everything by law during that time was separated by race; of course, that was ended with the passing of the Civil Rights act and schools were no longer allowed to refuse admittance on the basis of race. Most HBCU's are still mostly black, but, other races can and do absolutely attend. As a matter of fact, my suitemate freshman year was white.
The nature of a sorority is that it is for women. MIAKA, explicitly in their name, identify as men.
This case will not go in the favor of MIAKA. It's hard to believe that a group of men would have trouble processing the distinction between a sorority, fraternity, and a social group.
If this was a general interest group, sure, they could have a case.
THE NERVE of these people. If anything, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. should be the ones suing them for copyright infringement or something. Using their name/letters and distorting them into something to fit their own agenda is a #MESS
The sorority was was founded primarily on sisterhood. It was a made effort to uplift WOMEN of color when they were being' denied membership in other organizations and during feminist times. There weren't many opportunities for black women to be apart of such things, so naturally someone took the initiative to start the first chapter on the campus of a well-known HBCU, Howard University, and the rest (a century later) is history. Even to this day, membership isn't limited to just black females (though they do make the majority), it also consist of Asian-Americans, caucasians, latinas, etc.
If they want to be apart of a greek lettered organization so bad, establish their own and create their own image, chants, signs, service programs, scholastic initiatives, and so on while they're at it. JUST PATHETIC!
Alpha Kappa Alpha Member Star Jones Gives Her ‘View’ on MIAKAS
The Women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., a prominent black Greek-lettered organization for African American women, are up in arms over the miAKA controversy. MIAKA, an acronym for Men Interested in Alpha Kappa Alpha, is a reported auxiliary group to the Sorority.
Star Jones, a respected television personality and former Second Supreme Anti- Basileus for the sorority, took to Twitter to express her displeasure with the group.
“Shall I start with what the hell is a MIAKA…,” she wrote:
Ch... It's not even the fact that they're gay. A lot of times I don't like AKAs but these are my sorors and I have to defend them. We are women and a lot of the foundation of Delta Sigma Theta and Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc is based on the doctrine of being powerful, independent, educated, resilient, WOMEN. We are sisterhoods that take a lot of pride in our organizations and work to continue to strive for the best and represent what our founders Established in 1908 and 1913. These are private organizations and we pay thousands of dollars every year and dedicate hours upon hours of community service and philanthropy. So yes we do consider the signs, the calls, the organization names to be something that only the select members can use. It's not us trying to insult you, but rather us trying to uphold a distinguished legacies that began over 100 years ago.
Why not go to the NPC and try to start your own fraternity? It has nothing to do with homosexuality as there are many openly homosexual individuals who are members of both Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta.
