To be honest, the only songs in recent memory (last few years) that actually had payola for some period of time were probably Born This Way, Gimme All Your Luvin', Dance Again, and Hold It Against Me. Even the last one may not have been payola; I didn't follow it closely enough at the time.

I applaud Bieber for not doing dance/pop though. I actually kind of like this song. Nowadays it's kind of hard to get a number one without the song being a techno pop song. with the exception of Adele.
Agreed. The only reason why it's popular is because it's Justin Bieber.
You act like that's something unusual. Britney's HIAM hit #1 for a week, but it sales were completely frontloaded and the song didn't even crack the Top 50 year-end. But why did the song mange to sell well for that week? Because it's Britney.
Some of you may not like the song, but his fans, radio, and many people who were once his biggest critics have taken a liking into his new sound.
