While "Home" has brought Phillips his maiden Hot 100 success, the singer told former "Idol" hopeful Didi Benami (serving as a correspondent for Billboard sister publication the Hollywood Reporter following his "Idol" coronation) that the folk-leaning track may not approximate his future style. As "Home" was penned by Greg Holden and Drew Pearson, what's ahead for Phillips' forthcoming self-written songs? "Kind of … jazz and rock … some acoustic stuff.
"(And, lyrically) I have my own stories to tell.
"It's a very good song," Phillips said of "Home," "and it was an honor for them to give that to me. I'm excited to do my own stuff, though."
For now, Phillips will have to make "Home" stretch a little longer. Interscope impacts pop radio with the song on June 12.
