Katy was doing fairly decently on Teenage Dream till then. Dr. Luke and Max Martin have also proven to be a huge draw, giving us large hits.

Why is it that 2 musical superpowers and a relatively successful pop girl couldn't make a song that could last on Billboard?

Is it because Max Martin nor Dr. Luke weren't credited so the GP didn't know to check for them?

Because she released the wrong singles and Unconditionally at the wrong time (so it had 2 strikes going for it)

The only true flop is Birthday, and that's mostly thanks to the video

B and TIHWD were just terrible single choices and worst songs on album. The fact that we could have Legendary Lovers and Ghost as singles instead

Birthday suffered because of its horrendous music "video."

But if we look at it, Unconditionally did not flop, it underperformed, mostly because of the bad timing imo.

Birthday, despite being a bad single choice, it could've made it into the top10. The timing was bad, Dark Horse was still going strong and the video pretty much ruined it considering how important streams are nowadays. Walking On Air released at the end of May with a gorgeous video would have been top5 for sure, possibly even #1.

This Is How We Do was the wrost choice this era imo. Even International Smile would have performed better. Not even a relatively good music video saved it. Legendary Lovers released at the end of August with a VMA performance and a killer video would've been #1 for sure.

There it goes a strong and beautiful era. This would've given us a sixth single most probably and Katy her first Grammy.

The album would've sold over 5m WW for sure and I could see the era being as important and representative for Katy Perry as TD, even with only 3 #1s and less album sales.

Unconditionally was Dark Horse'd and people aren't here for Katy ballads for some reason. Birthday's video was horrendous, it kinda got Dark Horse'd too, and it's sales kinda sucked. TIHWD wasn't supported by radio so it kinda floundered in the 30s/20s on the Hot 100.
