I think this is actually the truth
But if we look at it, Unconditionally did not flop, it underperformed, mostly because of the bad timing imo.
Birthday, despite being a bad single choice, it could've made it into the top10. The timing was bad, Dark Horse was still going strong and the video pretty much ruined it considering how important streams are nowadays. Walking On Air released at the end of May with a gorgeous video would have been top5 for sure, possibly even #1.
This Is How We Do was the wrost choice this era imo. Even International Smile would have performed better. Not even a relatively good music video saved it. Legendary Lovers released at the end of August with a VMA performance and a killer video would've been #1 for sure.
There it goes a strong and beautiful era. This would've given us a sixth single most probably and Katy her first Grammy.
The album would've sold over 5m WW for sure and I could see the era being as important and representative for Katy Perry as TD, even with only 3 #1s and less album sales.
