On the eve of Amazon’s 20th birthday, the company introduces Prime Day, a global shopping event, with more deals than Black Friday, exclusively for Prime members

More than 90 years ago, holiday shopping found its official start the Friday after Thanksgiving, eventually becoming Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year. Over the years, Amazon has helped make Black Friday even more of a global online shopping phenomenon.

Next week, Amazon turns 20 and on the eve of its birthday, the company introduces Prime Day, a global shopping event, offering more deals than Black Friday, exclusively for Prime members in the U.S., U.K., Spain, Japan, Italy, Germany, France, Canada and Austria. On Wednesday, July 15, new and existing members in the U.S. will find deals starting at midnight, with new deals starting as often as every ten minutes. They can shop thousands of Lightning Deals, seven popular Deals of the Day and receive unlimited fast, free shipping.

Not a Prime member? To participate in Prime Day, Amazon customers can sign up for a 30-day free trial of Prime.

The Walmart vs. Amazon fight for retail domination just escalated.

Not one to let Amazon steal the sales spotlight, Walmart will launch a rival sale Wednesday to Amazon's recently announced Prime Day, including more than 2,000 online exclusive "rollbacks,"

Walmart called out Amazon for making its lower prices on Prime Day available only to Prime members, who pay $99 a year to be part of the service that offers free two-day shipping and access to video streaming and music. In a blog post slated to go up Monday, Walmart plans to say that it is "standing up for our customers and everyone else who sees no rhyme or reason for paying a premium to save."

"We just don't believe you should pay a fee to get a better price," said Walmart spokesperson Ravi Jariwala.

Same. I'm a bit pressed I ordered a Kindle Paperwhite the day before Prime Day was announced. I thought I was safe since there wasn't any holidays approaching.

That is because they are smart.

Their focus is on building market share and changing the public's shopping habits so that when all the Wal-Marts and Targets die off, they are the last man standing.

Nope. At some point investors start demanding more than pie in the sky. You will always have brick and mortar. It isn't going away simply because there are immediate needs. Amazon services items that aren't an immediate need.
