Mitt Romney will win presidential election... because Redskins lost to Panthers
Quote:
Quarterback Robert Griffin III #10 of the Washington Redskins is tackled by Captain Munnerlyn #41 and James Anderson #50 of the Carolina Panthers during the fourth quarter of the Panthers 21-13 win at FedExField on November 4, 2012 in Landover, Maryland.
If Mitt Romney defeats President Obama, he should send every member of the Carolina Panthers a thank-you card.
The Panthers went on the road Sunday to beat the Washington Redskins, and put in Romney’s favor a bit of folklore from the intersection of pigskin and politics.
It’s called the Redskins Rule: if the ’Skins win their final home game before Election Day, the incumbent party keeps the White House.
That was the case, prior to Sunday, in 17 of the 18 Redskins seasons that coincided with a presidential election since the team moved to the nation’s capital in 1940.
Before Cam Newton and the Panthers beat Washington — and gave Romney a shot in the arm almost as potent as Obama’s first debate performance — the only time the pattern was broken came in 2004, when the ’Skins lost to the Green Bay Packers, but President George W. Bush won a second term by sacking Democrat John Kerry.
For the superstitious sort, whether they be a sports fan, a politico or both, the Redskins Rule seems pretty simple. But if astrology is any guide, don’t expect things to be uncomplicated on Tuesday.
Instead, expect it to be messy, like hanging chads and Bush versus Gore messy.
Mercury is the planet that governs all forms of communication, transportation and commerce. Mercury stations on Tuesday as it heads toward three weeks of retrograde movement.
The last time Mercury stationed on Election Day, according to Daily News astrologer Jennifer Angel, was in 2000, the epic disputed contest when punched (or not punched?) paper ballots sent the decision to the Supreme Court.
“We all remember what happened in that election: It was pure chaos and misunderstanding,” Angel said, noting that the astrology behind Mercury’s movements points to trouble.
“It is total confusion, so we can expect to see things not running smoothly — and it is possible for one outcome to be considered final and end up not being final.”
