Well yeah, because they're being given reason to leave.
I think that's a dangerous attitude to take. I don't see the site around in a few years (or at least as popular as it is now) if people are just told to leave if they don't like it. Soon enough so many people will have left that there is no site left. New members will not just replace old members either once registration opens. In order to that, new members have to stick around. Just look at the number of members vs. active members to see what I mean.
And regarding your point about moderators not wanting to be disrespected, I get that. But keep in mind that in a conversation/argument, moderators will ALWAYS have the upper-hand against another member. They have authority. If they feel that they are being disrespected then they can easily dish out WPs until the member gets banned for their disrespectful posts.

You have your opinion about the future of ATRL.
We have a better picture of what is going to happen with ATRL in the upcoming future. Let's just leave it at that. I'm sure you feel that way now, and that's valid for you.
The talk of a mass exodus has always occurred around a major rule change. This is nothing new.
Moderators can still give WPs for this kind of behavior. There was just no point it having it publicized in HQ as a circus, especially when many members were being overly messy just for the fun of it.

By "arguing" does that mean calling yall out on things we think are unfair or completely ridiculous or bringing it up? Because nobody in here is extremely super disrespectful (nevermind the fact that there are so many rules and censors anyway) any more so than anyone else. Sometimes the mods themselves are a bit rude/passive aggressive/pompous so obviously the members aren't going to be all daisy's and sunshine, especially when they feel wronged or frustrated in the first place and are constantly being silenced, deleted, told to shut up and stop talking about it, etc.

You can "call us out" on things, just via Help request.
