Gang assaults in Germany by freshly traveled asylum seekers

The mayor of Cologne has summoned police for crisis talks after about 80 women reported sexual assaults and muggings by men on New Year's Eve.
The scale of the attacks on women at the city's central railway station has shocked Germany. About 1,000 drunk and aggressive young men were involved.

What is particularly disturbing is that the attacks appear to have been organised. Around 1,000 young men arrived in large groups, seemingly with the specific intention of carrying out attacks on women.

One man described how his partner and 15-year-old daughter were surrounded by an enormous crowd outside the station and he was unable to help. "The attackers grabbed her and my partner's breasts and groped them between their legs."
A British woman visiting Cologne said fireworks had been thrown at her group by men who spoke neither German nor English. "They were trying to hug us, kiss us. One man stole my friend's bag," she told the BBC. "Another tried to get us into his 'private taxi'. I've been in scary and even life-threatening situations and I've never experienced anything like that."

A policeman who was outside Cologne station during the New Year's Eve trouble told the city's Express news website that he had detained eight suspects. "They were all asylum seekers, carrying copies of their residence certificates," he said.

Girl, I've heard similar situations and women here feel so uncomfortable going to places where there're a lot refugees (like the railway station). They should've brought their women with them tbh.

our right wing will be happy to hear that I guess.... I cant at these stupid politicians who are all supposedely intelligent people with phds and what not... How foolish of them to believe its possible to integrate 1+ million arabs at once when we barely even managed to integrate the regular immigrants which come here on a monthly basis for several reasons. A *****ing mess!

The situation is sickening here: Can you believe you cant even charge those refugees when they steal? It doesnt have any effect on their assylum procedure. Only if "the safety of Germany is in danger", they can be sent out. Can you actually believe whats going on here in shops, in those houses where they are staying etc? You have rape, you have theft, etc., and you cant do anything about it but to say "hey xy, this is not a nice thing to do in Germany. Dont do it again.". Its truly awful. And now they came up with the idea of having them sign a sheet of paper where they "officially" agree with the German constitution. As if thats going to change anything... I literally cant.

Of course y'all are gonna speak against refugees when there are people born in Germany who are worse or exactly the same.

this is exactly it. You cant clean your house when the mess is getting bigger and bigger in the garden. Still your property, so what are you going to do? Are you focussing on the house first and letting the "parasites" from the garden get into your house which will lead to a never-ending circle, or are you going to start with the garden issue and just hope the house doesnt get dirtier? Metaphorically speaking, by letting way more plants in ur garden that are not assimilated to your property and the habitat, you promote the chance that the entire garden and property is going to collapse.

Are there any other instances of such occurrences in Germany prior to today ?
We're not talking about individual sexual agressions, we're talking about 1.000 people.

Couldn't they possibly go to jail though?
We have a few refugees in our region and one of my (girl) friends decided to join. You can join yourself or with another friend and you get a refugee, with whom you must spent one day of the week with. It's actually a really sweet idea and she even took him to school once! Though he's much older than her, (she's 18, he's at least half a decade older than her) & even though she even visited him with her boyfriend, he started texting her weird stuff and became demanding. She kind of felt uncomfortable and decided to continue until it got all too much, so she stopped going to the refugee center & stopped answering his texts & calls. 
I know not's everyone like that, but my point is that, I find it really sad, that even if there're people who actively want to help you, some refugees try to take advantage of that or do not even appreciate it.

No need to send them to their death. Have decent refugee camps in the neighbouring countries payed for by the international community.

Well, I live in Cologne, right in the city-center.
We are quite shocked about this since we have never experienced anything like this before and we are known in Germany for our diversity and being open-minded, welcoming, liberal and compared to other German cities like Berlin, Hamburg or Frankfurt to be less violent.
We have a huge gay community here and an immense amount of people with different background than German. My family came as immigrants to Germany as well to start a new life and fled from a war torn country.
We still don't know how it was possible for this things to escalate the way they did, we trust those who are responsible to investigate in this to find out why and what we can do to avoid something like this happening here again.
We have quite a few big events here where we all celebrate together and even something like this won't change our ways to do so in the future.

Well, we'll see when instead of women being raped/sexually assaulted it's gays being killed.

 wow why did they accept all these men really. The only ones that should be let in are women and children on a temporary basis until their home country is stable. The men should be denied and they will just have to fight for their country. Sorry but thats how it always has been. These men getting away from conflict will not fix the issue. It just creates a void where their country just falls apart and their women, mothers and daughters will be rape there with no one to protect them.
