Rihanna is a danger to society; Gaga offers competition
What an interesting week this is turning out to be for pop princess Rihanna. And, by extension, the world’s parents...
US singer Rihanna performs at the o2 arena in east London, as part of her 2011 'Loud' tour
Let me explain.
The French, in-keeping with their plans to do things their way rather than at the behest of Brussels diktat (unlike us kow-towers in England) have declared Rihanna a danger to society - I’m paraphrasing them here - and banned her current song ‘We Found Love’ from their TVs until after the watershed which, at 10pm, is an hour after ours.
Yes. Yes. Yes. At last. How refreshing is it to see an entire country stick up to the corporate demands of the world-wide music industry and the goddess of child erotica, Rihanna.
Without a shadow of doubt, the French have picked the right target when it comes to stemming the gaping wound of popular immorality that Rihanna represents.
To be clear, in matters of child sexualisation - particularly through the medium of pop music - most parent’s will testify that Rihanna is Queen Bee in this arena.
For, when it comes to levels of degradation in the name of her art, there are few depths that Rihanna has not been prepared to plunge.
Everything, let us not forget, has been right in front of our children‘s eyes.
Frequently, much to my disgust, Rihanna and her Amsterdam brothel window routine has been a fixture of primetime TV - often called ‘Family Hour’ - viewing as well.
The album cover of Talk That Talk by Rihanna: the typical age of a Rihanna fan is deemed to be around 12-13
Barbadian-born, American-designed Rihanna is a creature who cannot, for love or money so it would appear, keep her clothes on.
Give her a microphone and an audience - the younger the better - and quicker than you can say ‘stop sexualising our children’ she is whipping off her top and kecks and telling us how she ‘likes to go down’ and wants the boys to ‘stick it to her’.
Vulgar? Certainly. Popular? Immeasurably. Her new album, ‘Talk The Talk’ is currently No. 1 in 20 countries. Despair? That's not the half of it.
When I was at school, in the deep mists of time, we had a name for girl’s like Rihanna. I shan’t repeat it for fear of being told to wash my mouth out if I do, but let’s just say it’s less than complimentary but quite appropriate given her predilection for trashy behaviour.
Certainly, though, it wasn't the type of actions that you would shout about, much less broadcast it from coast-to-coast, nation to nation.
In the six years since Rihanna came to prominence with her pop R&B ode to old style Djing and music ‘Pon de Replay’, it has been disturbing to witness the visual corruption of who she is.
We should’ve been warned by the title of her third album ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ as it heralded a whole new, but not improved, Rihanna.
With the world wide smash of ‘Umbrella’, the sweet and naïve young woman had morphed into a dirty dancer who littered her image with satanic symbolism including the infamous ’Baphomet’ sign and the one-eyed image (often called ’the all-seeing eye’).
Of course, when it comes to promoting Satantic symbols, Rihanna, has stiff pop competition from Lady GaGa who, quite literally, jams her music videos end-to-end with tributes to the dark lord, himself.
But when it comes to exploiting sex in the realm of popular music, Rihanna, is currently out-pacing GaGa although, as ever, it’s a close call.
Many parents, including myself, are angered by the never-ending exploits of Rihanna. It has proved a constant battle to protect our young ones from her questionable influences.
And it has become increasingly clear how much this joy this 23-year-old takes in her unedifying behaviour.
Call her a role model and she - and her vast team of marketing and promotional advisers - will quickly show you why she isn’t.

No stone is left unturned. She has been on an unstoppable mission to pollute the world and her artillery includes the open promotion and glorification of drugs and guns as well as employing every sexual weaponry at her disposal.
Barely-there clothes? Check. Topless music video? Check. Bringing fans on to stage and simulating sex with them? Check. Pretend to masturbate during a concert? Check. Thrusting every possibly body part into the face of her fans for the delectation of the waiting paparazzi? Check.
The problem about shocking people is that each effort at doing so has to be more shocking than the previous attempt. Unfortunately, for Rihanna, her barrage of non-stop sexuality is slowing acclimatising people and the desire for ever more shocking behaviour is apparent.
Short of actually engaging in full blown sex on a TV show, there is little more she can do to shock us that she hasn't already. Which, from a marketing perspective, is bad news for her and her team because it’s the outrage she causes which maintains her currency.
So it is that her carefully stage-managed rebellion has turned to the hackneyed bunch of crowd-pleasers, designed to make all of us a bit hysterical when wafted under the noses of our children. Yes, that‘s right, she‘s brought out the big guns: alcohol, cigarettes and Class A drugs.
Please bear in mind that the typical age of a Rihanna fan is deemed to be around 12-13 and the Rihanna picture looks anything but rosy. We are talking about a very nasty influence indeed. The type that leaves a rotten smell long after the cause of it has departed.
For her new album she is pictured semi-naked (shock!), smoking, being fondled by another woman and with her hand, suggestively, down the front of her trousers.
Unfortunately, for Rihanna, her barrage of non-stop sexuality is slowing acclimatising people and the desire for ever more shocking behaviour is apparent
It was the smoking and the ‘dark undertones’ of the first single - ‘’We Found Love’ - to be released from the new album that the French have reacted so strongly to.
Good for them. ‘We Found Love’ - the video - which depicts and quite obviously glorifies shop-lifting, drug abuse and dometic violence is a non-stop visual and aural nightmare.
Her partner in crime for the video, director Melina Matsoukas, has her dirty paws over a bunch of Rihanna's most deplorably vulgar music promos including Rude Boy and S&M.
Clearly a likemind, then, who sees no problem in hitting the trash trail in a further bid to corrupt young minds.Personally, on this matter, I feel that the French have led and we need to follow.
Historically, as a nation, we may not like such a suggestion - either of taking the lead from France or imposing a censorship ban - but it is time to do the right thing for the sake of our children.
Until we do I fear that Rihanna and her people will continue to laugh in our faces. Daring us to stand up and be counted and to confront her disgraceful influence over our children once and for all.
So, as good a place as any to start is to get 'We Found Love' off of our TV's - just like the French - until the night hours.
The question is, can we count on our TV watchdog, Ofcom, to do it?

I wouldn't have a problem with "tough" and "vulgar" Rihanna if any of it seemed authentic to her, but it doesn't.

Pretty much. Their accusations are pointless tbh. 12-13 year-olds already know damn well what sex is and not even in the "clean way".

Stop letting your young child be raised by the TV and internet. Put down the gin and tonic and pick up a story book and watch your damn child.
Don't want your kid listening to it or watching it? Don't frigging let them.
Rihanna is not their parents, she is not going to live her life as if a young child is going to emulate it.
This kind of stuff makes me so angry, you can't have the whole world rated PG so lazy parents can pop their kids infront of the TV or Computer and leave them.

Yeah, that's her.
This article is quite irrelevant to be treated as public consensus, but if it's going to that direction, it's to show that she's making quite an impact there.

Rihanna knew what would happen when she named the album. They can "Talk That Talk" all they want. She won't be bothered. (I was going to use the angelo smilie here but I use it WAY too much, so I won't.)

i just do not understand why parents expect pop stars to change the way they act, just because 12-13 year olds may be watching their behaviour closely. it's NOT their responsibility.
parents need to take responsibility, rihanna is living her life the way she wants (people may disapprove but they have no right to be telling her what she should & shouldn't do). she knows the way people view her, and she takes ownership of that- she doesn't see herself as a role model. so why are parents continually trying make her one, then criticise how bad of a role model she is?? it needs to STOP.
if you teach your kids right from wrong and teach them well about the world, they will be able to think for THEMSELVES and therefore be less likely to try to emulate successful people like rihanna. SIMPLE. when i was young i saw mature movies etc and i knew what sex was since i was 8 (like, all the details ) and i turned out fine. its teaching your kids to be smart. that's all it takes.
