Mariah's Fantasy remix happened before JLo was famous, though there I don't think it was entirely just to get a #1 but a way for her to ease the public into her music having more hip-hop influences.
Agreed about the discounting, I mean, before there was ever an iTunes and back when physical singles were still a big thing, there was somebody selling them for $0.49, $0.99 for a week to get that #1.
