i'm too classy to do it to my family but if i buy something for my friends from one of those discount stores (marshalls, tj maxx, homegoods, etc) i leave the price tag on if it isn't dodgy.
those price tags say stuff like "$99.99" when the item is actually 20 bucks in the store
I kept them this year so that my family doesn't pretend to like my gifts if they don't. When they know it's expensive they're motivated to exchange it if they don't like it instead of just burying it in the closet. There's 5 Christmases worth of ties in my dad's closet that i've never seen him wear and i'm sick of it.
Well that is one way of looking at it. The cost shouldn't matter anyway. Whatever somebody decides to give you is something more than you had before. In other words, you only gain something when you receive a gift. Be happy that somebody even thought of you
its not the 1500s anymore. people know how much **** costs with or without the price tag. might as well start looking down on folks who give giftcards also

You could say the same thing about gift cards. Knowing the amount they gave/spent on you. Honestly as long as they got you a gift whether its cost little or a lot, its the thought that counts and the fact they thought about you.
