In general, over the past five years, Nikon has made better DSLR bodies than Canon. They have fuller feature sets and better prices. But Canon lenses are often less expensive, and Canon simply has a wider variety of lenses to choose from. However, Nikon is quickly catching up, and Canon lens prices are increasing. So if you think you're going to buy a smaller DSLR with kit lenses and you're not interested in upgrading, go Nikon. If you plan on being a serious photographer and building a "system" with cameras and lenses, you could go either way--it's a wash. Sports photographers and journalists are increasingly picking Nikon, while Canon has a hold on DSLR cinematography, because the Canon 5D Mark II was the first professional DSLR with full video features when it came out a few years ago.
