Why? It's because the digital market has grown so much and the album market has fallen a lot. Most people I know don't really know the album name or anything unless they stan for that person. For example, most of America probably have heard the song Party Rock Anthem and many of purchased it(or illegally downloaded it) but probably wouldn't have a clue as to what album it came from.
Singles are a lot more memorable to the general public nowadays...

Yep, i get what you are saying.
You can sell 1 million copies of your album to your stan base.
But if 6 million people is buying multiple singles then you are conecting to a bigger audience.
So, albums are important, but what about having 3 or 4 multi-platinum singles from one album? Is that not important for artists nowadays? I think it is.
People is not buying albums, and single sales is a market on its own.
