Mikal's +/- 50 of 2014 | Day 9: Best Albums, 25-Ware
It's that time again! And this year is the tenth anniversary of my hate and love of music on the boards!
What does that mean?
Nothing. I was planning a major "best/worst" over the last nine lists but gave up when I realized I would have to do a 200 song/video list and while I applaud the whole lot of you who do this every year (while questioning your sanity) I ain't ever had time for that. I work. And have to build a class. And have a dissertation prospectus to write.
Anywhoo
And usual I'm spreading the list over the two weeks. With one interesting caveat: as of right now I will not be featuring a Best Album list I'm doing a shorter album list. Honestly the way I listen to music has changed and I have pretty much given up on albums as a whole. Granted, I know who would win if I decide to do it (i's Jessie Ware, the MVP of 2014) but right now I doubt I want to listen to hundreds of albums, look at everyone's list and try to come up with a cohecive 50. Hell, I have enough problems with my Worst of 2014 lists that will be hysterical.
I'm starting tomorrow, because I can. And I use December 15 as my cut-off point for the lists. Which is interesting this year as the Best Video of the Year came out last December (no it's not Beyonce). The calendar:
I know that I'm going to enjoy this whole thing a lot (assuming I don't disappear or anything), but please, PLEASE tell me you listened to new Damien Rice. Because my god...

Of course! Easy top 5 (which I'm now leaning towards doing). But Jessie...she throttled everyone this year with her work.
Agree with some of the Best Videos already, yass at Dark Horse being included for worst. Jason tho? That one was fine. Bey slaying Best Songs. Jason getting dragged once again.
As is common and customary, I don't comment on my favorite songs or videos. Its because I let their merits stand on their own. And none of you care why I like something, you're here for the reading.
But I do have to make a note about a video that I expect to be on nearly every list and made neither the bests nor worsts: "Chandelier."
It's not that I don't like the song. Nor is it I don't like the idea of modern dance done by a kid to show a manic collapse of psyche. I just personally find the video boring, the dancing "eh" at best and I think it's been overblown.
Otherwise, here's part the first! Yes it's a wall. But it's in mini at least
