Disney's day of reckoning came in the
Sweet Sixteen, where half its remaining songs were eliminated in one fell swoop. Dorothy beat her friend Elton as
#1 "Over the Rainbow" survived a tight showdown against #4 "Can You Feel the Love Tonight"; #2 "When You Wish Upon a Star" founds its dreams dashed by
#3 "Take My Breath Away"; and, in the round's biggest blowout,
#1 "Beauty and the Beast" crushed its own kin, #5 "Under the Sea." But
#1 "Colors of the Wind" and
#3 "A Whole New World" both posted strong victories, against #4 "My Heart Will Go On" and #2 "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head," respectively. Meanwhile,
#1 "Moon River" proved triumphant in a battle of the ballads with #5 "Falling Slowly." The final two match-ups came down to the wire, with
#3 "Flashdance... What a Feeling" eking past #2 "Streets of Philadelphia" and
#10 "Let the River Run" continuing its underdog campaign with a narrow defeat of #3 "You Must Love Me."
