I haven't played any official Pokemon games since the GBA era. Are they still all based on exactly the same theme of getting 8 badges and becoming the Champion? That has always been my problem with the franchise - no amount of new pokemon and areas can make up for the fact that every game I've played is just a remake of the last one.
I've been playing hacks though. The storyline of Pokemon Snakewood is so ridiculous and OTT that it's amazing.

basically, yes... but don't go getting all reductive about the games. each one is solid and stands in its own right. they have different storylines intertwined and new/improved features. sure, certain things are the same, but that's no reason to not play any of the new ones.
