BBC Radio 1 head: 'Music streams to be included in UK Official Chart'

BBC Radio 1's Head of Music has confirmed plans for music streams to be included in the UK Official Chart.

George Ergatoudis made the announcement during last night's (February 17) Radio Academy Playlists: What Makes a Hit in 2014? event in London.

"So @GeorgErgatoudis has just announced that @BBCR1 will v.soon be including @Spotify streams in the Top 40 charts not just sales!" Earshot Creative tweeted from the event.

Ergatoudis later clarified: "To be clear @PeteyJamesDP @littleboots @earshotcreative @BBCR1 @Spotify Not just Spotify, other music streaming services will be included."

According to the British Phonographic Industry, over 7.4 billion songs were streamed in the UK in 2013, with streaming subscription revenue up 33.7% to £103 million.

It's a good idea. The charts are meant to reflect what is popular, and in an age where buying individual singles/albums is fading and streaming is on the rise, it only makes sense. It will offer a true scope of what the public are listening too.

Streaming directly reflects what people want to listen to. It shows song popularity.

Radio plays what it wants you to listen to. Airplay can be biased and bought.

Probably. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, since I think the UK charts do move a bit too fast.

But yeah, I'm not feeling this. I liked the fact the UK charts didn't have anything but sales included in them. Oh well, hopefully this starts now, so Mr. Mr. has a chance to chart.
