It was risky for Taylor in the sense that she went for a completely new sound (eventhough she had already done pop with Red) and it could've backfired her. I remember a lot of people saying she would flop, that her fanbase would ditch her for being a sell out or whatever.

In the big scheme of things it's not a risky album, it's a pop album after all.

I would defiantly agree. She literally did a 360 in terms of sound and stopped writing for country radio despite them being her main supporters. Also, her image has defiantly matured a lot. Obviously it all paid off!
