TOP 25 ARTISTS OF 2009.
Leona Lewis, one of the best artists of the year. She is such a pretty
and beautiful person. Why would some idiot go and punch her upside down?
Oi. Buy her album. She's flopping!
I may stan for Beyonce against her, but the truth is, I love
Britney so much. Britney Spears. She's been through so much
and she always comes out stronger. This girl is the shizz.
Like the previous artist, Rihanna is also a fighter. She
isn't just singing about ****, she went through ****.
R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me. I hope
those are the lines. Impressive comeback.
The mother of all comebacks, she made her mega
comeback this year with I Look To You. The title track
is boring as hell, but Million Dollar Bill is amazing.
I don't care what ya'll say, I still love her. She may be
a husband stealer, but her music's from the soul. I really
believe her loneliness and her sadness and I just want to
reach out and give her a hug.
Let's do it baby.
TOP 5
Hilary Duff, my first love. Oh, how I loved you so. She made
her acting comeback on Gossip Girl, and a failed single Any
Other Day. It's a new direction for her, and I'm glad she's trying
new things. I will always support her.
The legendary. The one and only. Michael Jackson. I never
got into his music before he died, but when he did, he propelled me
into a world of Jackson mania. His songs are truly some of the best.
RIP.
She may be releasing flop single after flop single now, but Mariah
Carey has truly been a diva for the past 19 years. 19 years, singing
songs about love and butterflies. Props to you girl.
I said Jackson mania, not Michael Jackson mania. Yes, I was also
thrust into the amazing world of Janet Jackson this year. I went out and
got myself copies of RN1814, janet., The Velvet Rope & All For You.
Her music is as fresh as ever, and from a measly 90 plays last year, she
has jumped to 800 plays this year.
Who else could the #1 spot go to?
Beyonce Giselle Knowles. She released amazing single after single
but what really sealed the deal for me was her I Am...tour. I was fortunate
enough to be in the first row and when she touched my hand and looked
at me as she sang Halo, I realized exactly what I wanted to be and who
I wanted to be like.
#25. Bad – Michael Jackson (1987) 39 plays
Bad is Michael Jackson’s follow up to the massively successful “Thriller”. It would be impossible to match the success of Thriller, but still managed to sell a whole lotta copies – more than thirty million. This album also produced more #1s than Thriller, with “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”, “Bad”, “The Way You Make Me Feel”, “Man In The Mirror” and “Dirty Diana” all hitting #1. Bad also has one of my favourite Michael tracks, and one of his fan favourites – Smooth Criminal. Yes, Bad was one hell of an album, and it truly deserves to be on this list.
Top 3 tracks: Smooth Criminal, The Way You Make Me Feel, Man in the Mirror
#24. Spellbound – Paula Abdul (1991) 42 plays
Paula Abdul had a huge career, with two number one albums and six consecutive #1 singles. Yes, six. Two of them from Spellbound, her second studio album. It was a decent effort and went on to sell more than five million copies worldwide. I doubt the album would have made it to the list if not for “Rush, Rush”, one of my all-time favourite ballads.
Top 3 tracks: Rush, Rush, Promise of A New Day, Blowing Kisses in the Wind
#23. One of The Boys – Katy Perry (2008) 49 plays
One of the better pop albums of last year, it boasts an impressive four hit singles. She made it big with I Kissed A Girl, but what made me a minor Katy Perry fan was the infectious Hot N Cold, which I still spin a lot. However, what really helped the album snag this spot is the infectious “Waking Up in Vegas”.
Top 3 tracks: Hot N Cold, I Kissed A Girl, Waking Up In vegas
#22. Discipline – Janet Jackson (2008) 53 plays
Easily one of the best R&B albums of last year, Discipline proves to have longevity. I wasn’t much of a Janet fan last year, and so only spun Feedback. This year, I listened to the entire album, and I loved so many songs. This was certainly a good album to keep on iTunes.
Top 3 tracks: Luv, Rock With U, Feedback
#21. Daydream – Mariah Carey (1995) 54 plays
Daydream’s singles may have been some of Mariah’s most memorable, but the rest of the album was certainly a bore. The delightful singles like Always Be My Baby and Fantasy received constant airplay and this pushed up the album’s spins considerably. There are some non-single gems though, such as “Melt Away” and “Long Ago”.
Top 3 tracks: Always Be My Baby, Fantasy, Long Ago
#20. Dangerously In Love – Beyonce (2003) 55 plays
This has to be one of the best contemporary R&B albums of the decade, with hits such as “Baby Boy”, “Naughty Girl” and of course, “Crazy in Love”. However, the rest of the album’s a pleasure to listen to, with tracks like “Yes”, “Gift from Virgo” and “Signs” all garnering significant airplay. There are a lot of duets here, but the ones that truly stand out are “Bonnie & Clyde 03” and “Crazy in Love”, both with Bey’s rap mogul hubby Jay-Z.
Top 3 tracks: Crazy in Love, Me, Myself & I, Dangerously In Love (Pt 2)
#19. HIStory – Michael Jackson (1995) 56 plays
The King of Pop makes a second appearance on our chart, with HIStory, an album filled with tracks lashing out at the media. The subject matter is heavy, and so is the music. The songs are great, but the sales weren’t, and his singles started to flop. It’s a shame, because many of them were true beauties.
Top 3 tracks: Scream, Stranger in Moscow, You Are Not Alone
#18. Jennifer Hudson – Jennifer Hudson (2008) 59 plays
This former American Idol contestant’s performance on American Idol of “If This Isn’t Love” sealed the deal for me, and her debut single Spotlight made a huge impact on my iTunes last year!
Top 3 tracks: Spotlight, If This Isn’t Love, All Dressed in Love
#17. Metamorphosis – Hilary Duff (2003) 65 plays
One of my favourite albums ever, Metamorphosis still receives airplay every now and then.
Top 3 tracks: Come Clean, So Yesterday, Where Did I Go Right?
#16. Control – Janet Jackson (1985) 73 plays
Janet Jackson’s breakthrough album has many great songs, but there were some standouts which are some of my personal favourites. I can relate to the lyrics very well, since I’m in dire need of control of my own life.
Top 3 Tracks: Let’s Wait Awhile, Nasty, What Have You Done For Me Lately
