Actually speaking of genital mutilation. How do y'all feel about circumcision. No dirty jokes please. this is mostly a serious thread
Totally against it, and I support legislation to ban it for people under 16. The baby needs to make his own decision when he grows up.
In fact, I wanna have foreskin right now but I can't because my parents made that decision for me when I was a baby. It's not fair and it makes no sense.
Speaking of the Muslim boy, I do think a lot of members were misguided and prejudiced. Think about some Christian communities like the Amish here in America. They practice a very conservative form of Christianity and also are very icky about male-female relation yet no one goes crazy about bashing the Amish Because they're perceived as these white proper harmless people. But so many Muslims are also law abiding citizens who cares if they believe a man and a woman shouldn't touch? I find that belief outdated as an agnostic but I am over the phase where I just bash people's practices, as long as they don't harm anyone else.
Are we talking about the muslim boy in Switzerland, the one they found out was liking a lot of ISIS post on Facebook and his answer was he liked the "music" in their videos ? Yeah...
Amish do not face backlash in America when similar stuff happens ? I would think the Amish is a much more secluded community that hardly interact with others, I don't know if it's really comparable to muslims who are really part of every societies.
I can agree with a lot of the arguments vegans and vegetarians make, but some of us were raised from a very early age to consume meat. It's a habit that's hard to break. But we're doing so much damage to the environment, all those cows farts are melting the ice caps. One century later there won't be a Miami, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, New York City, Sydney if we keep going

I think this is a mistake you and communion often make about members of this thread. See we are Atheists. To me as an atheist it is incomprehensible for anybody to be denied equal treatment based on their religion, no matter which religion. Just cuz in that thread we didn't go after the Amish, does not mean we approved of gender inequality practiced in that community.

if Amish people were to go to different social system, they have to adapt. I personally would equally drag Amish person if they were misogynist. I'm not gonna accept the fact people can just discriminate other people because of their religious practice, because it's flawed and discriminatory. Would you say the same thing if a muslim/christian/ameish/whatever person refused to touch you and shake your hands for the sole reason you're gay? I don't think so
Okay but think about it--the Amish are allowed to live in their own lil bubble, what would happen if some Muslims attempted to do the same in America?
The racists would go crazy. There are biases.
because amish people follow christian faith, and majority of Americans are christians, hence why they don't have problem with them, as long as "they believe in jezuss christ!11". So it isn't racism. Latinos have their own neighborhoods that are full of christian symbols, and they are POC. This has nothing to do with racism, just the fact they aren't chirstians.
I wonder how americans would react if atheists attempted to do the same thing few decades ago. I'm sure nowdays they wouldn't care since a lot of their family members are non-religious, but let's be real
Do Amish people have many sexist practices? Geniune question.
Anyway I think the reason is because they are statistically insignificant. I mean aren't there less than 500.000 Amish people worldwide? They are basically a non-factor compared to entire countries of muslims with sexist practices and most importantly laws. Not to excuse them if they hold sexist beliefs but they are not a priority. Not to mention that they aren't involed in terrorism so nobody really cares I think.

Again, we are atheists. We in no way approve of any religion, practiced by people of any skin colour to be source of gender or racial inequities. Unfortunately until those women complain about this inequality, we have to assume they used their freedom of religion and made the choice to live like that themselves.

Ehh, wouldn't say America is that nice to Latinos all the time, especially if they're darker.
Islamophobia is linked to racism definitely. The US has less problems w/Judaism for example even though it's different from Christianity. Most Jewish people would classify as 'white.'
America would be less tolerant of hispanics and jews if they were currently at war with them. It's not just one sided aggression even though you could successfully argue that muricans brought it upon themselves

Male genital mutilation still being allowed in the West is an embarrassment.
There is not a single reason this should be accepted by anyone. I am seriously appalled by people who think it's ok.

Sis, they don't think subconscious racism or systematic racism exist.
You'll never be able to convince them that the way some of them obsess over Muslims yet ignore the way prominently white religions wreck havoc across the world (Evangelist missionaries are basically to blame for the anti-gay Christian terrorism arising in Uganda and parts of Africa) means something about their views.
They truly don't think they have any internalized bias against any race so it's okay to them to only focus on Muslims and ignore other religions despite the factual disproportional discussion focused on Muslims. If so many here claimed to hate all religion, I wish some of them would tackle Zionism and how radical Judaism is committing ethnic genocide right now. Old men in Israel are also stabbing gay people at pride parades in Israel, but y'know, totally not worth ever addressing.
maybe this video will answer your question why we shouldn't even think about allowing something like that to even happen

I've been to Brussels and while it is an ugly city this video is exaggerating
My one issue w/Belgium is that they allow radical materials to be published and spread easily. But most Muslim citizens are law abiding people that contribute to the economy and the diversity of the country.

did they also had no problem with Judaism before WW2 tho?
it's only after Hitler's regime was defeated that christians started to treat jews better
