It was the perfect way to end Michael Myers on a positive note, while giving closure to Laurie Strode's character. Actually, they should have ended the series with Halloween 2. Halloween 4, 5 and 6 were good, but pointless after H20. That bothered me, too. They couldn't throw in ONE line that referenced Jamie Lloyd?
If you think about it, Halloween is an extremely messy, unorganized series. A bunch of dead end storylines, lack of character references, a couple of really bad plots. But it's still a really amazing series. All of its flaws make it great.

There was but it was written out during rewrites. During Laurie/Keri's class, one of her students is giving a report on the periodic Halloween murders in Haddonfield. She mentions how Laurie died in a car accident, causing her daughter, Jamie, to be placed in foster care with the Carruthers. She then goes to say how Michael eventually killed her. If I remember correctly, Laurie/Keri goes into a bathroom stall afterwards and cries while thinking about her student mentioning Michael murdering her daughter in their report.
The reason it was cut is because it would've complicated things since H20 was being treated as a direct sequel to Halloween 2. There would've been so many loose ends to tie up, like the Thorn cult. They wouldn't have been able to mention Jamie and ignore everything that happened in Halloween 6.
