The first half of the album (Bar Birthday and to some extent Roar) is a complete departure from her previous work. Even the second half of the album (which sounds somewhat boring) is still different and definitely more polished than TD.
And the Monsters shoot down anything, wether it's competition or not. After Warrior got positive reviews for the edgier, rockier side, Monsters till called it "uninspired" and a "regression" even though she poses no threat to Gaga.
At least with Katy they have a reason - vitriol.
