Thing is, a more "mature" grown-up image and music IS indeed the best thing she can do after the TD era and in today's music climate, BUT that's not the right approach. Yes, both albums came out on the same day. It was a huge thing in Japan with lots of media attention. It was a "battle" which Utada won by around 130k copies.

There's a reason the two albums with the biggest opening weeks ever came out at the same time, this sort of thing can help both artists.

Ayumi's GH "A Best" was released on the same exact date, and did 2,874,870 1st week.

What makes Utada's #'s more impressive is that GH albums tend to be surefire chart smashes in Japan, and Ayu has tons and tons of hits.

I feel like ARTPOP would easily cross the 1.5 milli 1st week if it were to be released on the same day as Prism, and both the media and labels fueled it like there's no tomorrow, in a Distance Vs. A Best kinda way.
