After having an impressive debut with "Lights", BBC Sound of...winner Ellie Goulding unleashed her sophomore effort "Halcyon" as a respectable follow up!. Listening to this one, I can see her growth and maturity as an artist. Her main power is her unique voice and she can do whatever with it to carry the song, but with the help of the electronic production, it brings in the special magic in her songs. While this effort is not as accessible as her previous one, the avant-garde like artistic direction is very evident among the tracks, and definitely its a step up from her debut. My top two would be interchangeable with "My Blood" and "Only You". These are the two things that Ellie has been constantly giving me life with its epicness! Althought at times I prefer the former one, as I really like its bluegrassy introduction, I really love Ellie's take in the chorus! And with some vocal outcry in the end!. While "Only You" features a hypnotizing vocal grunt at the beginning as it serves as a backing track then on. The highlight for me in this track is that overly produced after chorus! Its genius when I always listen to it. The laying of the tweaked vocals and some high distorted vocal shrieks are Just like the album title, actually the title track "Halcyon"'s sound signifies the sum of this whole record. The track is as breezy as the serene waves of the sea and ocean while Ellie's vocals and lyrics persuades the listener of serving calmness and positivity. The lead single "Anything Could Happen" previews us what would be the sound of this record is gonna be like before the release. At first I thought this was a bizarre lead single, but eventually all of it worked. Particularly the production after the chanting, is my favorite part especially the dolphin like squeak of Ellie "Explosions" is another favorite off mine as it features old-like choir vocals throughout the track. Ellie's vocals in this are so soothing! I really love its chorus and the combination of the violin and piano couldn't be more perfect instruments to carry this song out. "Figure 8" features the best production off any other tracks, and I love the boldness of the song overall. "I Need Your Love", a collaboration with Calvin Harris, of course, it has that signature Calvin trademark was a cute delivery by both, but I admit its not my favorite among my faves, but I use "JOY" is just a simple song where it's all about the vocals! Simply flawless delivery by Ellie! Props to the instrumental, it sets the mood of the song. The later parts are very enlightening! I really love the Ellie's take on the Active Child song "Hangin' On", it features her vocals at some of her highest pitch on any song especially the line "I just keep on hanging on". The song is very moving, especially when you hear her with some improvisations with her voice. The opening track "Don't Say a Word", you can tell this track is really an album opener! At first, I cackled at the opening, its as if Ellie's channeling some witch-like vocals making some oration. But when the drums kicks in, the good is getting better! And the last moments of this song are magical, I am asking for more! "Atlantis" is another body of water inspired song, while the song is great, the outcry is a bit repetitive but it doesnt mean its bad. "I Know You Care" and "Dead In the Water" are awesome ballads by Ellie, but so far, only her cover of "Your Song" is by far the one that I would use the most, but it doesnt take away the fact that these two aren't bad. As expected, I loved the deluxe tracks off this album. "Ritual" was like a Katy B song production particularly Witches Brew. and with that, its amazing it as it is, my favorite out of the bunch. That breakdown in the end is the highlight!. "In My City" reminds me much more as the sound from her debut album, its not much complex as a song compared to the rest "Without Your Love", I really love the drums and the production off this, the chorus is somehow very repetitive but it works overall!. The deluxe features also a Tinie Tempah inlcusion version of "Hanging On", but among the two, I prefer the only Ellie version At this point, I think definitely this 2nd effort is overall the stronger album of Ellie, but I listened to her debut with much more plays. At least, for fans of her music, we can't deny her amazing talent and her best asset, her unique voice!

Last year, this career striking track of Rihanna made the Top 20 at #17. This year, it managed to rack up the upper half once again! Mainly, it was due to its overriding success over the new year last year! Listening to it, makes it a classic already! though its not her best single or some may claim it as overrated (I do) sometimes. It's somewhat really special and the vocals are still magical! One thing is for sure, the success is very much deserved!
Last Year's #44: Coldplay - "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" |
KARMIN - "Crash Your Party"
 | "...Oh yea I gotta let you know...I'm here to crash your party, You think you're the star of the show, But I'm about to let you know, I'm here to crash your party...The bigger you are the harder you fall, oh you had it all, Before I crashed your party...."

Miles better than the basic "Brokenhearted"! Though its just a buzz track, I really love all what this song offers to us. The raps are much better, although overall this isn't catchy as that, and that's why it didnt make a great impact. But I am probably one of those who prefers this one to it. The video is very cute as well, and both really shined on the camera, well Amy particularly.
Last Year's #43 : Pixe Lott - "All About Tonight" |
CHERYL - "Call My Name"
 | "...Sayin’ I, I love what you do to me, need you to stay with me, I, I love you too much to let go...How'd you think I feel when you call my name, You got me confused by the way I've changed, How'd you think I feel when you call my name, My name, say my name baby..."

Amidst being a great dance track and jam, which was a product of Calvin Harris, this was generic and a safe lead single for me. No problem because the general people are definitely excited for this direction for Cheryl. And it totally worked! Thanks to the great music video. Particularly, she looks smoking hot and her doing the choreography alone on the music video helped achieve the song a Top 5 peak on my countdown!!

Stepping a bit from the Top 20 position, is one of X-factor's best product overall. She vocally blows the rest with her voice, and she can deliver a great choreography and she's got a good personality as well. I was excited about her second effort in last year and she did put off a great album showcasing her strength as a vocalist with the dance productions. Too bad the UK radio and seems the general shunned and blacklist her music which resulted to her flopping besides her lead single. Scary, but next time, I hope fate has to be in good terms to her career.
