What do you all think about 'gender roles'?
I don't believe in forcing them on a person, as we should be free to be who we want to be in this country, but I can't say I think they're bad to impress upon very small children personally.

They suck. I will do what I want, I don't give a **** if it's feminine or masculine. That's why I'm happy I'm gay. Now people don't question why I'm doing something that's "feminine". My life would be a mess if I was straight.

Gender roles are stupid. In pur society, I, as a woman, am supposed to take care of the home and remain virtually powerless. I, as a woman, am supposed to pop birth children and submit to my man. I, as a woman, am supposed to remain docile and feminine and God forbid I do anything that isn't prototypical of the female role deemed socially acceptable. I'll be crucified for being too masculine, rebellious, or unorthodox.
What lies between your legs shouldn't depict what type of person you should be. It's who you perceive yourself as and what's in your brain and you shouldn't let society instill that in you.
Men don't have to be masculine. I think that's what's wrong with society today, especially men. They're afraid of expressing their true selves and their emotions because it's not what's socially accepted.

Gender roles DO indeed suck.
It annoys me that some of our own fellow blacks want to put this notion on other blacks (I.e. Stop acting gay,calling others *insert kittycat slur here* and the like)

Gender roles exist for a reason.
contrary to popular belief, there are some things men can do that women can't and vice versa, because of physical and psychological differences and because of that some things should be seperated between them. If not, then lets just have one bathroom for male and female, or have guys play in the WNBA. Obviously the person who thought that gender roles didnt need to exist didnt really think this out

I agree with both Kendra and Smoke somewhat. Women shouldn't have to be passive domestic servants and I'm not against effeminacy in guys either. But Smoke is right that because of certain physical differences, there are some things one gender can/must do that the other can/must not.

Well black people are naturally ignorant so it's expected. 
It's funny because I have a test on developmental psychology tomorrow and one of the topics is gender roles. There are physical and psychological differences between the sexes, but it's annoying how people are expected to act a certain way based off their gender (something we did not choose). If you fit the gender role then good for you, but don't pressure others to conform like you. Not everybody wants to be basic.

True. I think they are necessary for kids up to the age of 12 though. Just for men in terms of emotions. Look at what happens when you don't learn as a man how to handle your emotions.

I get what you mean, but there are plenty of men who can't handle their emotions who most likely were raised with this "be a real man" mentality. And by handle their emotions that doesn't just mean crying all the time, that means not controlling anger (and therefore abusing their family), can't control their misery (therefore abusing alcohol and drugs). Things like that.
