How so? Lucario was never a Mewtwo clone so they both can co-exist. I'm sure Mewtwo's coming back. He is still the most requested character, he is insanely poplar thanks to X/Y and he has the Mega Evolution gimmick. Also, Sakurai stated that he was considering his inclusion.

Lucario isn't a clone. What moves do they share besides the special? They have different animations and special.
Ness and Lucas? Clones. Link and Toon Link? Clones. Fox and Falco? Clones. Captain Falcon and Ganadorf? Clones. Marth and Lucina? Clones. They all have the same specials.

Mewtwo was ok but he's not a character that I NEED to return. As you said, a new character can take his spot or even some other characters that haven't been confirmed yet like Meta Knight.
They sometimes reveal a character when there is an anniversary of their game.
