the title is quite easy to understand... it's quite literally the combination of what typically makes up popular culture with what typically makes up "art" (high/fine art). thus the album touches upon things that are typically discussed in pop culture - druges, love, sex, while it also considers topics not usually in popculture that are usually left to the "fine"/"high" artists - greek/roman mythology, astronomy, fame

I literally have no idea how she can have the bridge & middle 8 have this anti-materialistic meaning to it and then have the chorus be "We could belong together".

i totally get how some of the lines seem incoherent, but I don't see where you're getting that "contradiction"... the references to anti-materialism "music not the bling" don't contradict the "we could belong together"... the 2 things she's saying could belong together are art & pop, neither of which are necessarily materialistic

I can't tell you how many times I'm reading this over to try and understand it.
Why though that's the question, why mix the 2 I don't get it

um artpop makes so much sense to me
listen to the lyrics and think of the first verse as "pop" and the second verse as "Art"

See I always considered her a music artist Not a "Jeff Koons" kind of artist if that makes sense. (unlike ARTPOP)
Edit: She's taking the 2 things she loves the most and made an album about it? Tbh I get more "pop" from ARTPOP than I do "art"

I didn't mean they contradict; I just meant that they seem so unrelated.

exactly and that's the barrier she wants to take down. she's arguing that she shouldn't have to pick whether she's a jeff koons artist or a katy perry artist. she wants to an artist period.
but as to whether she infused enough "art" into ARTPOP, i agree.. it's way more POP than ART, which is why the critics are responding in the way they are i think, but if she had tried to put more ART in, people would say the music is even more unrelatable, so it's a wash.

Ok I guess I kind of understand I guess it would make sense if she made an album about ART and made a pop album about it
Well maybe that's what she thinks ARTPOP is, she thinks as a whole its a piece of audio art
Idk this is so hard to decipher

The album is meta-pop (if that's a thing). It's an album about the creative process - hence all the sex references and Venus/female iconography. I found the ARTPOP in all (well, almost all) of the individual songs. With the verses being bizarre and sang in strange ways with unique lyrical motifs - followed by POP in the chorus. Venus, Applause and Aura are perfect ARTPOP songs. Sexxx Dreams does this, too, I think.
She falls flat on Mess & Drugs and Madonnatella. They just don't fit on the album and mess up the cohesion.
As for the reviewer hate? It's been cool to hate Gaga since 2011 and we all know critics are idiots held prisoner to the tides of pop culture. It's in vogue to hate on Gaga so, if you're LM, brace yourself sis

To be quite honest the whole "its cool to hate Gaga" theory is a load of ********. She gave those people reason to write horrible things about her. If they loved it they would have said so

She didn't give them anything. Gaga aligned herself with the "bullied" and gay people so it's okay to bash her because you're a loser if you stan her. That's how the GP see her. It's gonna be tough to shake that image but she has to or she's the new Carly Rae

She'll probably die if she read that, she gives EVERYTHING she has into each project she does
