My Thoughts on Yuri on Ice (Sorry, this is kind of long)
I just finished
Yuri on Ice and... I thought it was lowkey a flop? I don't know, I get why the show is popular, but I found it disappointing compared to how hyped up it was. MAPPA had a atrocious production schedule for this show and it's very obvious, because this looked
rough multiple times. The ice skating itself was also boring because it was very repetitive. The supporting cast was underdeveloped and tropey, but this is a sports anime so that's not a surprise. This was a show that was a bit too ambitious for it's own good, it would've benefited more from more episodes.
The biggest thing to talk about is Yuuri and Victor, and their relationship. Like most of the show, I couldn't really get into it. However, I do appreciate this show for giving us a relationship like this. In western movies and TV shows centering around gays, they are almost always effeminate-stereotypes and/or straight-up killed. And in Japan, the target audience for BL is straight women who love the idea and image of two men getting it on, but god forbid it happens in real life and they request human rights. A completely trash episode of Prisma Illya "jokes" about this when Illya is creeped out by her friend's new fujoshi hobby, and the lesson of the episode is you should respect and educate yourself about people's differences. The episode ends with the girl saying boys should get married in real life, and everyone else (including the hardcore fujoshi that turned her on to this in the first place) look at her in complete disgust and desert her.
Some people have been complaining that there was no "proof" they were a couple or they were mad that there was no real kiss. It's important to keep in mind that this is Japan, a very conservative and censored country. To have a show like this come out of Japan, and an anime no less, is a miracle. The director and writer have been explicit about Yuuri and Victor being a couple. The writer has also gone on record to say she managed to create a world where homosexuality isn't a big deal, and she'll protect that place with all of her might. Although I was disappointed by YoI, it's still a good show, and I'm very happy that it exists and has taken pop culture by storm. This was a huge labor of love, and I hope that it can inspire and pave the way for other anime in the future. I'd be down for a Season 2, as long as it's planned better.
Not even close to reaching my Top 10 though, poor dat.
