The thing I don't like about k-pop is the lack of drive for individuality and artistic merit. Obviously in the West vs in the East, there are different values, and this bleeds into what kind of music is being created. I really do feel as though there is a more present effort for distinctiveness in Western music vs in Eastern music. Granted, this often means songs are only popular in the West because they're so stupid, they're just memes that spread everywhere like an STD in a bareback bathhouse. But, I don't know. I just really need that individuality and artistic drive, even though it sometimes leads to worse music.
there's even messier ones
like Taeyong (member of NCT), hes been getting dragged by fans and the GP for him selling 'stolen' toys when he was literally 12 years old (and hes 21 years old now)
hes cried on camera so much cause people will NOT let it go and i can tell it's gonna break him eventually if this keeps up. the dumb ass **** the GP blows out of proportion makes me want to scream ugh

Honestly, I might be the only one who feels this way, but I actually love how they seemingly prioritize product and commercialism more than those in the US and Europe. They do focus on their artistic merit to an extent and to say otherwise belittles the genre a bit, but you're right that it's far less than in Western society's music industry. But this means they consistently put out something top notch, something enjoyable, and won't take such extreme risks so as to irreversibly damage their careers (as many of my US faves have).
The same is true to a lesser extent with J-pop, which as I've said I'm already more used to. Some artists like Utada really hit that perfect mix of brilliant artistry mixed with good business thinking, and that's when the best material is made.
I'm also not that deep into K-Pop yet and already have a profound respect for how refined the music is, so that's something to note.

i see what you mean, but just like in Western music, there's a alot of artists and groups they write their own music, compose it, & produce it(DEAN, Seventeen, The Wonder Girls) just to name a few. yeah in the beginning most groups start out getting their stuff written for them and all that(which happens in western music too, mind you and there's nothing wrong with that cause i believe whether they wrote it themselves or not, a song is a song and its about how the artist performs it, in my case. because if you can connect with it a song , that proves just as much as you writing it or doing it all yourself).
and thats also why when popular members get solos, alot of their material is solo written (by them or a few co-writers) and they have alot of impact in what they want to put out. like, thats why so many idols major dreams are going solo because once you've been in a group for so many years, having the ability to FINALLY do the music you wanna make and not worry about flopping or not selling (cause you mad so much money already), its great.
so please just dont think of it as everyone not having artistic value because many artists do and value it highly. and you'd be suprised with the music they creatve. from classic ballads to thot anthems, its all original to them and that's what matters alot for them and their fans.

sorry, i didnt mean to make this so long omg
See, when you look at it from this perspective, a lot of K-Pop artists just seem like better businesspeople than US artists.
lmao it is.
dont even get me STARTED on 'visual holes' (aka when a member of a group isnt a particular 'out of this world gorgeous'). they will go off on their face, weight (which have alot of idols go on extreme dieting because of it. its like how our tabloids (like Star and People magazine) just on extreme levels).
politic scandals are even worse. a member from the girl group Twice had to do a Nation-Wide Apology for waving the flag of HER ORIGINAL COUNTRY (where she was born from) and the GP went IN. she was crying and it was so sad (shes now widely loved there thankfully but still, a mess)
& to your other comment, they lowkey are lol. make all the money you can while in a group and get all the fans support so your good FOR YEARS then make your own material as the way you want it. that's how you do it lol
