I think we all agree in this thread, among the Democrats and more liberal independents anyway, that a drop or two of socialism helps out. That you can't have a purely capitalist system without disenfranchisement of certain people and that systemic discrimination exacerbates that.
It's more a question of, you know, how much is too much? Where does the line lie that, once crossed, signals a detriment to the economy and people rather than a benefit? What extent is actually going to pass through legislation, and what proportion of the country actually wants these things on either side of the political spectrum?
I appreciate Sanders' yearning to build on the legacy of the man I view as the greatest President in US history, but I worry that the context then and the context now are too far different to compare Bernie's plan to the New Deal at any great length. The basic premises seem to be much the same - they're fundamentally both oriented toward improving quality of life and economic situation for individuals and the country - but the contexts and specific policies are perhaps not quite as comparable.
Not that any of this is a reason I support Hillary, of course - this is coming more from an analysis of Bernie's plans from the outside, rather than from the point of view of "oh this isn't true therefore Hillary's better" (mostly because that wouldn't make sense).

It's kind of a given to have found racist Hillary supporters in 2008 because she was running against Obama, it's kind of a given you'd find anti-black xenophobes supporting Trump, who called for a ban on Muslims and Mexicans, but in both cases, it isn't and should not be a point against the respective campaigns.
|
I think the only difference here lies in that Trump's message and rhetoric intentionally draw these kinds of people and by extension draw more of them, whereas Hillary is not a racist and Bernie is not a sexist.

They're so irritating. Like, we have EVIDENCE that these programs can HELP the economy when done properly, and without encroaching too far - or in ways that are egregious - on capitalism.
Like, a good point to go with Bernie's tweet would be that since FDR, we've seen tons of successful social programs and... none that have led to economic collapse?

I was talking to my Bernie supporter friends and all of them went phone banking for SC, even though they're all super socially awkward, I was surprised bc I don't think I could ever do anything like that. It's so cool that they're putting themselves out there for what they believe in
I talked to them about my doubts about Bernie's policies/ideology and I think most of them were answered (although I'm still skeptical about the likelihood of everyone going out and getting a democratic House back.

It's not going to happen. I don't care who wins, whether it's Hill or Bern, and I don't care about youth turnout - the gerrymandered districts and, to an extent, campaign finance are so grossly detrimental to Democrats that there's almost no way it can happen.
I'd love it to happen and want it so much, and that's beside my political alignment between the two potential Democratic nominees, but I just don't think it's even possible unless something VERY substantial changes about the electorate and about the general perceptions of each party.

And I wouldn't be too sure about either Hillary or Bernie beating Rubio, I think it could go either way in that kind of race.

Oh I also just saw this. Not sure if you were referring to me only (I definitely did write on someone's wall) but I've nothing to fear. I'll say it here too. I would, at this moment in time, definitely vote for Trump over Sanders if both are the nominees. And it has nothing to do with being a sour apple over HRC losing

Remember, on the GOP side, if you paid the fee to be on the ballot, you remain on there even if you dropped out since then. Jeb, Carly, Graham, Christie, etc were on the ballot and received votes still.

GOP had a record turnout, which is still something for them to be happy about. This, Democratic turnout is down from 2008 talk the pundits have been doing is amusing to me. They forget, 2008 primary and election was a once in a generation type of event that set unprecedented record turnouts (first legitimate black candidate vs. first legitimate female candidate). Of course this time around, it will be down, but they're producing quality turnouts that continue to be dismissed it seems.
Can't wait to see more primary turnout numbers vs. primary turnout numbers for each party in swing states. That's where the real tea will lie.
