Here are some stats that show the true historical achievement of Adele with the album 21.
This is the album's
66th week in the US album chart top 5.
Here is a list showing the artist albums with most weeks in the top 5
in the 21st century. It makes very embarrassing reading for all other current artists;
66 wks - 21, Adele
26 wks - Confessions, Usher
25 wks - Fearless, Taylor Swift
23 wks - The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah Carey
22 wks - Let Go, Avril Lavigne
20 wks - Get Rich Or Die Tryin', 50 Cent
19 wks - Recovery, Eminem
18 wks - The Marshall Mathers LP, Eminem
18 wks - Oops...I Did It Again, Britney Spears
18 wks - Hotshot, Shaggy
18 wks - Country Grammar, Nelly
18 wks - No Strings Attached, N Sync
And here is the
all-time list.
71 wks - Thriller, Michael Jackson
66 wks - 21, Adele
66 wks - Born In The USA, Bruce Springsteen
55 wks - Jagged Little Pill, Alanis Morissette
49 wks - Calypso, Harry Belafonte
47 wks - Falling Into You, Celine Dion
46 wks - Rumours, Fleetwood Mac
44 wks - Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em, MC Hammer
43 wks - Mariah Carey, Mariah Carey
40 wks - Forever Your Girl, Paula Abdul
Depending on the effects of the TV special and the sales for big new releases in late June/early July (of which there are quite a few), 21 could equal or even beat Thriller for most weeks in the Top 5 ever.
I remain mildly pessimistic as I prefer to be pleasantly surprised rather than disappointed.
But what is in absolutely no doubt is that 21 has not just had a great chart run for this era, but one of the greatest runs of all time.
