It's very rare for an artist to win AOTY twice as the lead artist on an album. No woman has ever done it.
Red didn't have the impact (the singles stalled after IKYWT), genre support (alienated country without picking up pop), or the (social) narrative to win, and Daft Punk had some sob story about how the academy
owed them. The (dating) backlash wasn't important, so far as the Grammys were concerned.
1989's a totally different situation. Massively successful, unavoidable. Beloved by critics and the public. Single-handedly ruling, changing, saving the industry. A year-defining, career-defining album. It has great odds.
