I don't really think Midnight Memories is that bad, and the change in sound was necessary imo. As good as Take Me Home is, I think another 18-track album full of homogeneous power pop would be a bit overkill.

Some of their newer material is kinda bad (Don't Forget Where You Belong and Something Great), but some of it is done right (You and I and Through the Dark).
Although Take Me Home's sound is completely predictable, the quality of the tracks is very consistent. They are all very addictive.
