In short, like Teenage Dream, the party starters are definitely not lacking on this album.
If there is a difference this time out, it's Perry's newfound maturity. It's not boring or brooding; it's worldly, carrying an almost refined quality.

Not like a DJWS breakdown. A 90S DEEP HOUSE POWER ANTHEM breakdown. Think like the crowd chanting TGIF in "(Not My) Last Number One".

I think Katy like REALLY liked Sara's "Brave", so wanted that for single No. 1. But the album itself is evolving from TD despite what the haters of Kats think!

Well ET did do well, but it didn't do as well as Dark Horse and [likely] Walking On Air will do as promo singles. Katy has a lot of hype this time around. Dark Horse sold, what, around 200,000 in its first week. WOA will probably perform similarly or better. ET sold like 64,000 first week? I don't think she should've even bothered with promo singles this time around. She has enough hype. And if it does well they can't release it as a single soon or Roar and WOA will cannibalize each other.
I guess she probably has some hits already stocked up on the album, but, idk...

"UNCONDITIONALLY”
Katy’s favorite song on the album follows the Teenage Dream model to a letter: ambient synths and powerful drums (the angels in the last song stopped their tears to take up percussion) building to an absolutely huge chorus. “Open you heart and let it begin,” she sings. “I will love you unconditionally.” Not the most creative way anyone’s ever expressed feelings, but we were so taken in by the heavenly pounding we didn’t care a lick.

With "Double Rainbow", produced by Greg Kustin and co-writer Sia Furler, Perry was allowed to "dump pent-up emotions" and "get things off her chest". The song was described as a "massive ballad".[6] Jason Lipshutz deemed it as a "breathy love track" with a "powerful chorus that explodes upon impact" with lyrics that include "One man's trash is another man's treasure / so if it's up to me, I'm gonna keep you forever". He added that "Kurstin brings the pop sensibility he's flashed with artists like Kelly Clarkson and P!nk, while Sia's presence connects this sleek, shimmering pop track to [her David Guetta collaboration] 'Titanium'".[8] Elijah Sarkesian felt that "Some of Katy's finest vocals of the album are on this song".[25]
Double Rainbow – The Sia Ballad. Produced by Greg Kurstin, “Double Rainbow” seems to be pegged as the favorite ballad of the record. “You’re brighter than the Northern Lights,” she croons. “They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure…so if it’s up to me, I’m gonna keep you forever. A double rainbow is hard to find.” It’s a big song that, if serviced properly, could give her a better ballad follow-up to “Wide Awake.”

A collaboration Katy wrote with Sia and Greg Kurstin, “Double Rainbow” continues the fascination with the natural world that’s marked songs Sia’s worked on recently. (Count it out: First titanium, then diamonds, now rare meteorological phenomena.) Katy’s vocals here are among the finest on the album, and there’s just enough eccentricity in the lyrics: “I understand you / Like a double rainbow.” If you’re wondering why they named the song after an Internet meme, join the club. Maybe they figured three years is an eternity in viral time?

"Unconditionally" already has me at ambient synths + drums. The lyrics can be trash, but obviously not with Katheryn Jackson Perry II at the helm. Everything sounds 100000x better than Dark Red Horse.

Yeah man, a lot of them. Most of them weren't THAT impressed, it's like a typical Sia song (like Diamonds)
