Sales are down for all genres and all songs. Which is why this years top selling song is at like 1.9M while in 2012 & 2014 at this point in the year, the top selling song had sold over 5M.
We obviously can't say "this song for SURE would've done ___" but the point of adjusting is to see how impressive a number is for the climate at hand. Digital sales for current hits are down almost 60%~ since 2013, so a song doing 140K in a climate 60%~ lower is moreso just as impressive as doing 315K in the climate 60%~ higher.
