Welcome castaways to your 9th & Final Results Show before the Merge. Below will be the rates/commentary of the judges for each of the contestants. After you browse through those, I will post the individual average scores for each tribe's contestants, a leaderboard showing how you all rank individually at this point, and most importantly the final average team scores which will determine which tribe is heading to Tribal Council.
For any reminders as to what each score means:
A score of...
9 - 10: You clearly understand the theme and delivered an A level entry.
8 - 8.5: You understand the theme and showed it with your song, but your song fails to do so as strongly as the 9 - 10 level entries.
7 - 7.5: You scraped the theme well enough but there's something missing that's keeping you from nailing it.
5 - 6.5: There's something related to the theme but it's not primary enough to receive a high score.
4 - 5.5: There's barely anything related to the theme at all.
2 - 3.5: You sent in a song. We're just not sure why.
1 - 1.5: You sent in a song period.
With that said, let's get started...
Tribe Abantu
1. coolcristobal - Jazz - Vanessa Hudgens - Sneakernight
Quote:
Dylan - 2.5 - The only thing I can say that's positive is that it does have the little jazz influence to it. Other than that, this is one of the worst entries this season. There's artists like Duffy and Amy that would have worked just fine. Even "Candyman" by Xtina would have worked. Your worst round by far.
Quote:
Nicole - 3 - This is still a pop song with some R&B/Soul/Jazz/Whatever you wanna call it influences throughout. However, if you're being asked to give an example of a specific genre you shouldn't give one that only has a sprinkling of the genre that we wanted to see. There are so many songs that have bigger Jazz influences than this or even better...contemporary Jazz artists who have released material post-2000! You could have done much better than this, very disappointing.
Quote:
Ethan - 1 - This is the worst song ever recorded. Vanessa Hudgens is an ugly, sleazy mess who deserves none of her success. Terrible choice, nothing about this song is jazz-y.
2. Speezy - Alternative Rock - Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Quote:
Dylan - 10 - Green Day was a really nice route to go. I didn't know how you would handle this genre because it seems to not be the genre you're most familiar with. Anyway, I believe this is my second ten in a row I've given you. Good job. Hopefully you'll start moving up that leaderboard.
Quote:
Nicole - 9 - While I will be saying to a lot of people this round that I wish they got a bit more daring with their song selections I will say this is a great song! However, like I just stated...a more daring entry would have been interesting. Nevertheless it works and I've always loved this song. It's so well written! And to me it's surprising that it was such a big mainstream hit considering it is truly alternative.
Quote:
Ethan - 10 - Alternative Rock was so popular back in the early 00s, you had a lot to choose from, but Green Day is quintessential Alt. Rock and this song is quintessential Green Day, so it was a perfect choice.
3. -brian - Latin Pop - Shakira feat. Wyclef Jean - Hips Don't Lie
Quote:
Dylan - 9 - It's a little too predictable for me to love this entry, but it is Latin Pop. It was a huge song. It brings out many different genres of latin pop so I gotta give it to you. Good choice. Shakira's one good song! jk. she has two.
Quote:
Nicole - 10 - Another very typical choice but that being said I can't deny that Shakira is really the face of Latin Pop! So any song of hers fits perfectly. I love how she always incorporates her Latin roots into her music and is always doing something different. She's experimented a lot but at the same time retains her own signature sound. Hips Don't Lie is always a fun song to listen to.
Quote:
Ethan - 10 - This was about the only song I could think of when I saw "Latin Pop" that was really popular, other than maybe something by Enrique Iglesias. Awesome choice!
4. Bey_RihStan - Dance-Pop - David Guetta feat. Rihanna - Who's That Chick?
Quote:
Dylan - 7.5 - I just feel like even though this song is dance-pop, it's not the best representation of the genre. You chose one of the weakest Rihanna songs to go along with this genre in my opinion. "Only Girl" and "Don't Stop the Music" would have worked better than this if you were going the Rihanna route. It's not a bad fit. It's just not my favorite choice out of the options you had.
Quote:
Nicole - 8.5 - Well you undoubtedly picked a song that fit the theme but I do think there are better songs by Rih herself and of course other artists that also would have exemplified the theme. Who's That Chick isn't her best although it does get a little bit of a bad rep since I don't think it's completely horrible either.
Quote:
Ethan - 8 - It's more of a dance song, but it definitely can fit in dance-pop. Rihanna is the least talented artist I've seen, she's lucky she has a nice body, and it's not even THAT great.
5. rl231 - Contemporary R&B - Miguel - Adorn
Quote:
Dylan - 9 - I like the choice. One of the most recent true R&B songs that have smashed. You got lucky with this genre because I know you are very familar with R&B based on your past entries and some of your votes in the games section. Way better than last round.
Quote:
Nicole - 9.5 - Love this choice! I think this song is particularity great because there are other styles of music that are also infused into the song as well, which is a very contemporary thing to do. Miguel is such an interesting artist because I feel that he enjoys taking some risks with his music.
Quote:
Ethan - 9 - There were a lot of songs you could have chosen, but this certainly wasn't a bad choice! I couldn't make it through this song because of how boring it is.
6. NEZ LUNAR - Country-Pop - Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble
Quote:
Dylan - 1 - This is a pop song. Nothing about it is country. Easily the worst entry in history of survivor.
Quote:
Nicole - 1 - Obviously I Knew You Were Trouble is Taylor's least country song ever so I won't waste time writing anything more than that. Although this seems to be an entry of clear sabotage. I wonder if the rest of your teammates can get to the bottom of why you did this?
Quote:
Ethan - 1 - You're unintelligent if you thought this was a good choice.
Tribe Jikelele
1. Starships - Pop-Rock - P!nk - So What
Quote:
Dylan - 9 - P!nk or Kelly Clarkson were the best routes to go if you were choosing pop girls. Possibly Avril. So What is probably her most "rocky" song on her most recent albums so nice choice out of P!nk's discography. Keep it up. Better than last round.
Quote:
Nicole - 9 - Well when anyone thinks of Pop Rock I'm sure the first names that come to mind are P!nk and Kelly Clarkson. So you hit the nail on the head with this one. P!nk indeed has mastered this genre. Kudos for picking one of her best songs as well. When will Raise Your Glass or Blow Me?
Quote:
Ethan - 10 - P!nk is the queen of pop rock! This is such a great song and it's definitely pop rock perfection.
Dylan - 8.5 - I think you could have came a little harder. Calvin has more electro sounding songs in his discography. I do love the song though. Nevertheless, good choice although it's not the best you could have sent considering your genre was one of the easiest.
Quote:
Nicole - 8.5 - Ah, EDM. Another genre of music that could have had a really interesting and daring song picked to represent it. That didn't really happen here. Not that theres anything wrong with that but the genre is just so vast and diverse and goes way beyond the EDM songs that are commercially successful. Anyway there is no denying the fact that this is obviously an EDM song and a pretty good one nonetheless. I love the way it builds up. Calvin is such a talented man and Florence's vocals are out of this world.
Quote:
Ethan - 9 - You certainly could have done many more basic songs that would have been easy 10s, but I appreciate that you didn't. As far as representing EDM, this is an 8/10, but I bumped it up for thinking outside the box.
3. Sebas - Disco - Bruno Mars - Treasure
Quote:
Dylan - 8.5 - It's a disco song I can't argue it's not. I just was more thinking "turn the beat around" disco rather than this type of disco. This route works as well though. Just wish you hadn't sent a song someone else posted as an example. Still a good choice.
Quote:
Nicole - 7.5 - This was one of my least favorite entries out of the ones whos actually hit the mark. I just feel like again you could have done so much more with it than just picking the most popular disco-influenced song of recent times. This whole retro sound is coming back a bit so surely there are other artists who have experimented with disco influences. Treasure is just blah to me. You did alright but could have done better for sure.
Quote:
Ethan - 10 - Really the only song you could have picked, other than maybe Get Lucky. I despise Bruno Mars, but this is disco!
4. MiMiLamb - Synthpop - Lady GaGa feat. Colby O'Donis - Just Dance
Quote:
Dylan - 9 - Synthpop was big during this time so you chose a good year of music to use. One of the better options for your genre. I think there were a few better choices, but still a very good selection. Nice job lambchop.
Quote:
Nicole - 10 - ***Flawless synthpop classic! Glad to see one of the best and best-selling debut singles of all time is getting some love in the competition. Perfection still!
Quote:
Ethan - 9 - I think this fits the genre pretty well, I just think that there are songs that could have done it better. Nice job though!
5. Zune - Traditional Country - Blake Shelton - Austin
Quote:
Dylan - 7 - You made your genre much more difficult than it needed to be in all honesty. It's country and definitely not pop so I'll give you that. I just don't really like that you pretty much admitted your entry was a bad one in your pm to me. If you don't like your entry, how am I supposed to?
Quote:
Nicole - 3 - Lol at Blake's mullet in the video. Anyway, this sounds different than the country that is out there today but that probably has to do with the fact that this was released in 2001. I doubt that it was really considered to be "traditional" country when it was released back then. I consider tradition country to be influenced by really old-school county, as in country in the 60's or something. This most definitely doesn't fit the description anyway so yup.
Quote:
Ethan - 10 - EW that long hair! Disgusting, but he's ugly even still today. However, it adds to the definitely country vibe! Perfect choice. What the hell is this song about? Is Austin a girl?
6. Element - Bybblegum Pop - N'Sync - Bye Bye Bye
Quote:
Dylan - 8 - This works well enough. It may be a little more teen pop than bubblegum, but it's still in that same mix of music during that time. Oops was released in 2000 though correct? So I woulf have probably sent that in because it's bubblegum to the max. Not as strong as your previous rounds, but still holding on to that good streak you've been on these last few rounds. Bye Bye Bye Element.
Quote:
Nicole - 8 - Such a classiccccccccc song from the teen pop era! I still love it. Anyway, I know it fits the criteria and all but in regards to bubblegum pop I do feel that there are other songs that are lighter to listen to that may exactly be better examples of bubblegum per se so I'm not giving a 10 for this or anything but I know it still fits into the general category so you did well enough.
Quote:
Ethan - 8 - It fits pretty well, but there are many other songs you could have picked that fit it much better. When I think of bubblegum pop, I think of much lighter and more fun. Kind of a random choice even though I adore this song.
7. Starmie - Blues-Rock - The Black Keys - Lonely Boy
Quote:
Dylan - 9.5 - Best entry on your tribe for sure. I was thinking John Mayer when I assigned this genre to you but Black Keys work just as well. You may have had a harder genre to handle, but you handled it better than those with easier genres if we're being real. Great job.
Quote:
Nicole - 9 - This song has a funky feel to it! While Blues isn't a genre I would say I know the most about I can definitely hear the influences so I suppose that must mean that you did a pretty good job.
Quote:
Ethan - 10 - This was a great find! The music video is a riot. Definitely better than anything I could think of for Blues-Rock. Nice job!
Now that you've seen how well (or poorly) you performed this round. It's time to announce which tribe is headed to Tribal Council. But before we do that, let's see how you guys rank up as individuals. This is important because even though you are in Tribes, the highest average scoring tribe member is awarded immunity if their tribe falls into last place. I also will now have a leaderboard with your overall average score throughout the game thus far. You will see a +, -, or = sign which indicates the number of spots you've risen or fallen since the previous round.
Now it's time to announce who is the winner of the ninth round and which tribe is headed to Tribal Council...
Results
The tribe coming in 1st place winning team immunity is...
Tribe Jikelele for the third time in a row with an average of 8.6.
Coming in 2nd & heading to Tribal Council...
Tribe Abantu for the third time in a row far behind with an average of 6.61.
Congrats to Tribe Jikelele on your third and final win of the semi-merge. You guys will not be heading to Tribal Council as you are safe this round. You can all breathe. On another note, all 7 of you will be entering the merge so congratulations on that. However, Tribe Abantu will be heading to Tribal Council for a third time.
The members of the losing tribe are to PM me a vote for the member you want eliminated from your tribe. These votes are changeable meaning if you change your mind, your vote can also change. I'm not going to put a time stamp on your votes, but they should come in fast and in a shorter period than entries did for sure. Good luck to all of you in the vote. This is where alliances come into play. Scores are not everything. I'll see you all at Tribal Council.
Remember, -brian & Speezy are safe from the Abantu vote and have made the Merge as well. Either coolcristobal, Bey_RihStan, rl231, or NEZ LUNAR will be the last castaway to exit the island before the Merge.

Well its not about me not liking my entry, it's that I think its rhetorical to think anyone can claim traditional country music in the 2000's unless its a cover song, which would be bending the rules sort of

Same reasoning above.
I'm just wondering what would be a traditional country song in the 21st century that isn't a cover that would be considered traditional country.
Now if I got the genre "modern country" I don't think I would be so pessimistic
I think I cannot agree with the logistics behind your guys judgings this round
Ethan - 9 - There were a lot of songs you could have chosen, but this certainly wasn't a bad choice! I couldn't make it through this song because of how boring it is.
Adorn's not boring at all, in my opinion. It's an R&B masterpiece, but thanks for the 9 though

I mean I'm not the hugest country fan myself so I can't think of any examples off the top of my head but I'm sure there are artists who choose to avoid mainstream norms and are influenced by traditional country music. There has to be songs out there that fit...even if they're not artists who are commercially successful. If there are songs that can fit a disco theme from the 21st century there surely are ones that can fit a traditional country theme as well. I just think perhaps you didn't look or think hard enough. It wasn't the easiest theme but it definitely wasn't impossible. There are billions of artists out there...regardless, your tribe is safe so you can redeem yourself next time.
