^All of GaGa's singles are pushed strongly with payola, too. IDK if "NMT" is payola pushed yet. Maybe when it begins to stall.

Who Knew got a 2nd wind all on it's own thanks to the tour with Justin Timberlake. >_>

Figured Latin countries would eat it up, for club purposes. Pretty weak performance worldwide. I'm predicting 110k-130k debut in US.

That would be highly embarrassing, but if things don't pick up you are probably right. Maybe now Christina will step it up and realise that she cannot take a 3/4 year break between Albums.
*crosses fingers in the hope that American Idol will save this song*

It is. But it's a known fact it is secretly done in the radio industry still. And, as far as GaGa..it's just my own thought, based off a lot of circumstances. Knowing the industry though, I'm convinced.

I think it may have been used at the start of her career when she needed support, but she has momentum now... As long as she can keep it going, radio will keep playing her songs. She has the 'it girl' tag, from my view of the radio industry they seem incredibly eager to play her songs. She hasn't had a flop yet, but when she does then payola may become necessary again. Is payola expensive?
Anyway, I hope NMT keeps climbing towards the top spot today.

First of all, the audience has to like a song in order to become a hit. You can use payola for something that is not radio friendly at all, stations will add it but the response from the audience will be terrible so after a while they'll drop it.
The thing is that there are millions of good songs that could work on the radio every day... The labels pay the stations, they add it and if the reaction from the audience is good it might go top10 on POP for example. You cannot score a top10 airplay hit just with payola.
For example, Orianthi. The most obvious payola of the last few months. Why did the stations add orianthi out of nowhere? Was she some kind of a huge superstar or something? Nobody knew her! LOL Her label just chose her from tons of other girls with the same talent, they decided to make her popular, the song was ok, they knew they would get good scores, but both the single and the album didn't sell. So, they won't spend money again for her. One hit wonder.
Before 2000, when the US radio was not so corrupt and corporate, things were innocent. All the big names would get instant adds without money, regardless of their age. They didn't care about the money so much... Local DJs could decide too what songs they play. Now, 2-3 companies own all the radio stations and they send the playlists ready right from their headquarters... So don't blame the DJs of a station if they don't support a song enough or at all... They just do their job.

Yeah, I believe it was used heavily during early The Fame era. "BR", "Telephone", and "Alejandro" however have benefited from it.
Payola can be expensive, as you are literally buying spins. I remember a report on Sony BMG being caught doing it. There are instances of buying spins, then labels also offer bribes like vacations, electronics, etc. to get programs to play/give songs airtime in some way. It's usually done with lessor known stations (as in not major ones like z100/kiis) so it won't be easily detected.

Why would they bother with the expense of it if it only usually done with lesser known stations? They are less important, and the smaller stations often follow the big stations... It would make more sense to pay kiis/Z100 to play the songs, and then others would do the same... Of course that method has holes and may not be as effective, I'm just speculating I just think it's a shame that labels have to spend money to get songs played on top of everything else, no wonder the industry is not profitable anymore.
