5. Meridian Dan feat. Big H & JME - German Whip
DON’T BE ON A HERO TING. KEEP IT MOVIN’, EARPHONES IN. Kind of my lyric of the year. UK rap singles > US rap singles in 2K14.
4. G.R.L. - Show Me What You Got
Closest I’ve come to crying to music, quite LEGIT. The melodies are so powerful, the kind that provide a drug effect. So euphoric and addictive. Those final choruses, I can’t. Those adlibs. The added synths. HEY! BOY! TELL! ME!
3. Becky G - Shower
Same kind of visceral reaction I have with ‘Show Me What You Got’, but here the beauty lies more with the melancholic feel the melodies construct, rather than jump up-and-down ecstasy. “La da dee la da da la da daaaaa". Ugh so good. The violins and flutes <3 The cute choir chants <3 The vocal rhythm of “you light me up inside like the 4th of July” <3
2. The Lord - Style
Completing the triptych of melodic pure pop bliss. The romantic rush of “Enchanted”, the danger of “Treacherous”, and more emotional weight than either whilst remaining a 3 and a half minute Max Martin pop song. Most beautiful chorus ever? Obv. And the guitar squiggle that leads into that chorus changes my life daily. And let us take a moment to look at how She renders Her entire LP1-4 catalogue irrelevant in one verse:
I say I heard that you’ve been out and about with some other girl, some other girl. He says what you heard is true but I can’t stop thinking about you and I… I said I’ve been there too a few times (shrugs and gives a slight laugh). BYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. And nothing will ever be sexier than Her “a tight little skirt” adlib btw.
1. Sofi de la Torre - Vermillion
Ughhh why have I not heard this whilst coming down from a heroin rush at 5am in a grimy club. Might start doing heroin just so I can truly capture the essence of this masterpiece. All the girls are trying to do dark dream-pop but Sofi came and dragged them all. And it’s as much about what the song doesn’t do as what it does. It’s a sparse arrangement, and the build is subtle. But it’s so much more than the sum of its part; it manages to both haunt me and make me want to dance. And not in the weak bitch Robyn sort of way, **** out of here with that mess. Song of the year.
