Pretty Hurts
"Pretty Hurts" was a pop flop single from Beyoncé, which seems a bit odd considering the hype surrounding her self-titled era—not to mention the attention garnered by that atrocious Aussie who cowrote this song. "Pretty Hurts" is not particularly amazing, but it is noteworthy in that it is perhaps the only truly great thing that Sia has ever written. Now kindly close your eyes and imagine Katy Perry singing this.
Fever
"Fever" was the lead single from this year's album from The Black Keys, and I guess it's pretty much what you'd expect from a lead single by The Black Keys.
Go
Beyoncé may have taken the Sia-penned Katy Perry reject, but no other A-lister stepped in when Rihanna turned down "Go" by Grimes and the Blood Diamonds. Not that that's a problem, mind you, considering Grimes kept the song for herself and turned it into something more excellent that Rihanna likely would've managed herself.
True Love
"True Love" was Coldplay's third single off of Ghost Stories, and it is perhaps the most representative single of the album. Honest, beautiful, haunting, and heartbreaking, Chris Martin claims that "True Love" is Coldplay's favorite song that they've ever written.
Tough Love
Jessie Ware released "Tough Love" as the lead single from her sophomore album of the same name. The catchy Brit-pop song sonically finds Jessie somewhere between Adele and Ellie Goulding, which is not necessarily a terrible place to reside.
Fruit
I haven't quite figured out how I really feel about Marina + the Diamonds' new project, entitled Froot. It's eponymous lead single is well written and well sung—not to mention the fact that it's drastically less try-hard than some of the music of her previous album. Yet, I find something about Marina's whole Froot schtick a tad off putting. Perhaps it's her intentional misspelling of the word fruit, or perhaps it's because she seems to be courting her gay audience with an album whose title term has historically been used as a derogatory term for gay men. Nevertheless, the two songs Marina has thus far released from the project are nice, and the line "I've been saving all my summers for you" from the chorus of "Froot" is quite excellent.
Happy Little Pill
Troye Sivan, some popular gay youtuber from down under who I'd somehow never heard of before, surprised me with his melancholic electropop debut single "Happy Little Pill." The song may sound like something that a teenaged ATRL member with too much passion for Lana Del Rey and Lorde may produce, but there's something strikingly effective about the way that Troye addresses loneliness and all the ways that people try to cope with it. "Happy Little Pill" is a mature debut for the teen, and it's good enough that I look forward to hearing more from him.
Let Go For Tonight
Foxes rose in prominence thanks to her vocal contribution on Zedd's Grammy winning hit "Clarity," but I'd argue that her own "Let Go For Tonight" is a much better song. The song combines slick production, pristine vocals, and a soaring chorus to create one of the year's most unfortunate non-hits.
She Looks So Perfect
The Australian boyband-that's-not-a-boyband-even-though-it-secretly-is-a-boyband 5 Seconds of Summer breached the States with their anthemic single "She Looks So Perfect," a slice of summery teen pop delight. Some of its lyrics are odd, such as when the guys sing of making a mix tape "straight out of '94" … because they feel nostalgic for their diaper days? But, really, the selling point of the song is the line "You look so perfect standing there in my American Apparel underwear," which is a ridiculous, incredible, typical of the age, inappropriate, and just plain perfect. Huge bonus points for that line being gender neutral, too.
Like I Can
Sam Smith channels the bombastic energy of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" on his impending hit "Like I Can." The song finds him telling his love interest that no other man could ever love him like Sam can, and somehow manages to cover the topic without really attacking his competition—a rare feat in songwriting, where lyrics tend to point out all of a rival's flaws in order to make the singer look better in comparison.

Great singles this update Jake.
I'm not a big Sam fan and I don't know that Troye song, but the others are all excellent.
Go is great, travesty it was Rihjected.
That guitar work at the end of True Love is one of my favorite moments in music all year. She Looks So Perfect is a great song. I don't know why people are so down on 5SOS

Once Upon A Dream
Bless Angelina Jolie for personally selecting Lana Dull Rey to interpret the beloved Disney classic "Once Upon a Dream" for the end credits of the blockbuster film Maleficent. It's a combination that made no sense, and yet Lana's eerie rendition of the song easily ranks amongst the three best things she's ever recorded.
You & Me
You+Me is the stage name of the dynamic duo comprised of Pink and her friend Dallas Green, and "You and Me" is the name of their debut single. The song is arguably the best thing to come of this musical union, as its sparse folk arrangement accentuates their complimentary voices. Pink supplies wonderful harmonies as the pair weave a somber tune of belonging together.
Thinking Out Loud
Not since the glory days of one Shania Twain has a ballad as romantic as Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud" graced the top 10 of the Hot 100. The acoustic-driven song consists of timeless lyrics of growing old together, complete with a shout-out to Rihanna's anthem "We Found Love."
Drunk In Love
The latest team-up from the most powerful couple in music presents a bit of a conundrum. You see, Jay Z's presence is essential here because it accentuates the song's message that marriage doesn't kill a couple's sex life. That's nice in theory, but the execution is the song's shortcoming. Here is Jay Z, on his wife's otherwise steamy and exciting sex song, dropping lines about abusing Tina Turner and having "breastses" for breakfast. While Beyoncé may be satisfied with his performance in the bedroom (and the hallway, and the bathtub, and the kitchen), she should demand better in the studio.
I Will Never Let You Down
Rita Ora and former boyfriend Calvin Harris partnered to produce the pop perfection that is "I Will Never Let You Down." It sounds like something from simpler times, and it's all the better for it. The song strikes a difficult balance—between optimism and cheesiness, classic and contemporary—to startlingly satisfying results. I've never heard any other songs by Rita, but I don't feel misguided in saying that this is her best.
The Heart Wants What It Wants
Prior to the completion of Selena Gomez's contract with the horrid Hollywood Records, she managed to release one last great single with "The Heart Wants What It Wants." The heartbreaking ballad brings new maturity to Selena's catalog of hits thanks to the revealing vulnerability of its lyrics and the top notch minimalist-influenced production provided by Roc Mafia. "The Heart Wants What It Wants" poses Selegend in an entirely new light, which is an encouraging prospect as she embarks upon the next stage of her career with the much more capable Interscope Records.
If I Could Change Your Mind
HAIM set high standards for themselves with their preceding singles, and "If I Could Change Your Mind" definitely hits the mark. The song is delectable synth-pop goodness that relishes in its own joyousness. It takes a certain type of talent to make complexity look so simple, easy, and natural.
Empire
Shakira's recent self-titled album may have been largely a disappointment, but its highlight is the remarkable "Empire." The song is a soaring rock-leaning ballad that emphasizes Shakira's majestic vocals as it builds to an explosive climax as "the stars make love to the universe."
A Sky Full of Stars
Since the dawn of the mainstream EDM craze, everyone and their mother has been trying to get Coldplay's Chris Martin in on the game. He resisted, until finally embracing the dance stylings on his own "A Sky Full of Stars." EDM has never sounded so heartbroken, and heartbreak has never sounded so glorious. Every time I listen to this song I remember standing outside beneath the stars with my dog at three in the morning, and my heart breaks anew.
Queen
On "Queen," Perfume Genius counters the worst fear of homophobes everywhere— that the mere existence of gay people will negatively impact their children. "No family is safe when I sashay," Mike Hadreas drawls over a thundering production. Elsewhere, he embodies the identity of the stereotypical queen, demanding, "Don't you know your queen?" The line is delivered with such power that it nearly singlehandedly reclaims the label "queen." Others may use the term as a pejorative, but he demands to be worshipped and respected as nobility.
[b]I apologize for the lengthy delay. I hope to have my top 10 up by Saturday, with my top films, and my most played songs, albums, and artists to come next week. #itsnotoveryet
