The votes have been tallied (thank you to my 17 participants!) and I'm ready to reveal which boy band reigns supreme—and I mean supreme. One group of fellas ran the table and they dominate the top ten. These may be the most lopsided results I've ever had in one of my rates. But don't fret! There's a little bit of something for everyone (except maybe fans of the group that bombs out before the top twenty) and, as always, there are some surprises along the way. (For your information, scores have been rounded to two decimal places and ties were awarded to the song with more higher ratings.) I know some of you have been itching to start, and I can't wait to hear what you all think, so let the boybandemonium commence!
Please Don't Go Girl, I'll Be Loving You (Forever), This I Promse You, and Thank God I Found You (sorry Queen! ) are the worst songs in the rate, so those need to go first.
"I'll Be Loving You (Forever)" (1989) Hangin' Tough
Hot 100: #1
Overall score: 3.91 High score: 8 (Carlton) Low score: 1 (Flashing Lights, mariah., Right Direction)
The lowdown: This third single from New Kids on the Block's breakthrough album, Hangin' Tough, gave them their first #1 single, as well as their biggest hit on the R&B charts. It has not stood the test of time, however. Over the course of four-and-a-half minutes, the song goes pretty much nowhere, and inspires little more in the listener than mild curiosity at how Jordan Knight hit such extreme falsetto.
The vote: Likely spurred by boredom, voters trashed "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)." Only six gave it a score higher than 5.
Please Don't Go Girl, I'll Be Loving You (Forever), This I Promse You, and Thank God I Found You (sorry Queen! ) are the worst songs in the rate, so those need to go first.
The lowdown: Another oddly parenthetical title, this Delfonics cover originally appeared on New Kids' flop debut album. After the group hit it big, the song was released as a standalone single to spur sales of their earlier work, which eventually reached triple-platinum status.
The vote: Though a slightly peppier ballad than its predecessor on the countdown, "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind)" didn't fare much better. It similarly received scores of less than 5 from almost two-thirds of voters.
Best bit: This spoken interlude: "Girl, can we talk for a second?/I know it's been a long time/Since someone blew your mind/Like I did."
I love Boyz ll Men, but I stanned hard for Nsync, New Kids and BSB. New Kids are the kings, they basically gave birth to Nsync and BSB lol. But of course Boyz II Men songs kills all the others.
The lowdown: The Best Original Song category at the Oscars has become notoriously weak since the death of the soundtrack album, but at least nothing in recent years approaches the awfulness of this nominee, written by Diane Warren for Meryl Streep's film of (almost) the same name. Despite being boring and cheesy, it somehow reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The vote: "Music of My Heart" received one 10—the first of the rate, and the last you'll see for a little while.
Best bit: That you almost can't tell the difference between Gloria Estefan and the members of 'N Sync.
