It's more the GP taste than it has to do with the artist. Safe predictable songs being accepted on the charts, radio and etc is what's regressing the industry. I mean just look at Rihanna and LOUD era, when she released Only Girl/S&M she smashed, but as soon as she tried it with Man Down she bombs, so it's really not about the artist rather than people taste in general.

Yes! This is the final answer I think.

By the GP being boring and liking the same thing over and over, it makes record companies only want to put out those songs, take less risks, and sign less interesting artists. They're more interested in selling potential than driving music as an art forward by anything larger than a step.

yea and when the music execs see something that works they push to recreate it over and over and there is very little allowance for risk, especially with the music industry in decline. Producers and music execs influencing them / choosing them are the biggest issue.

This is just my opinion:

Katy Perry: Very simple pop. 'Teenage Dream' is a very simple album promoted to the heavens by Capitol. I honestly think the only real neat song there is 'E.T.' while 'California Gurls' is catchy because it's a remake of 'Tik Tok' made by the same producer without the talk-rapping. The other singles could have been selected from another big pop girl album and with the same quality promo achieve similar success. I liked her much more in the 'One Of The Boys' era.

Maroon 5: Generic band-pop. Had a couple of catchy songs but they only have success because some women think Adam Levine is "hot". Really bad lyrics and it's clear the singer hasn't been honest with his music during their whole career. The songs feel like that a lot to me. The videos so directly aim to pump Adam's "macho" image to sell while the music most of the times disappoints using vocal melodies and variations used a jillion times in the past and really unimaginative instrumentation.

Justin Bieber: Honestly, the only real and natural talent he had was his "kid" voice. I didn't even hate him when everyone was spamming the 'Baby' video. Once he lost the kid voice, he fuels his career on his looks (only loved by kid girls) and generic pretentious music. Bieber, you're not the next Michael Jackson, not the next Chris Brown, the next anything, you wanna jump from the most hated artist and bandwagon to others' style to get praise? Get a grip. Create your own style. You're not pulling it off. Be yourself. Be Justin Bieber, you're just irritating fans of the artists you're imitating 'cause the little girls don't get it. They go to your concerts to see you move around, they don't pay attention to your music or the show. I've read some even thought you couldn't sing anymore and they'd be happy if you pursued an acting career.

One Direction: I'm sorry I really do dig 'What Makes You Beautiful' but that's about it about this group. They look like fun/funny lads but you don't have so much success based on your (limited) talent. This is looks-based success again. Notice all of the artists I'm mentioning have clearly used their looks to cater to the demographics that might like them. But they don't offer remarkable talents as songwriters or performers.

But Linda is being a bit sensitive about this. There's going to be "pop-" versions of EVERY genre.

And anyway, Linda isn't saying that P!nk is holding the industry back, it's more that the industry is holding P!nk back.

And if Linda feels so strongly about this she should use her power to sign and mentor a rock-female to get what she wants. P!nk isn't responsible for rock music's future. She's doing the music she wants to do.
