It's totally true. It's nearly always the kids that had strict upbringings that are the ones who go off the rails and are totally crazy when they start college/uni.
Those people that had nice parents who gave them freedom don't as much, since after doing things their whole teenage years, it just isn't a big deal for them anymore.
Everybody goes through a rebellious phase. It's part of growing up and defining yourself as a person. It's part of developing your personality, and proving that you don't need to defend on other people. The normal time to go through that phase is during puberty, but some parents make it virtually impossible for their kids to rebel in any way, so in those cases it simply happens as soon as the kid moves out (i.e. college or gets a job and rents a place somewhere).
