Yeah, I suppose it has nothing to do with the fact that it peaked about a month before CMM did and has received virtually no promo in the past 3-4 months (whereas CMM has gotten promo from the Olympics Swimming Team and Glee).
...and Gotye still comes out on top. He's ahead by 600-700k now, and the sales gap will probably get even wider in a few months when Gotye sweeps the Grammys.
And again... Gotye reached the 6M mark six weeks faster than Carly did. It's an undeniable FACT that his song sold more in less time.
Besides, what's the point of subtracting the remix sales, anyway? The people who bought the Tiesto remix were still paying money for Gotye's song, so why shouldn't they count?
It's like, dude... all the numbers point to "Somebody" being the bigger hit, and it doesn't matter how much you try to discredit its success.
Besides, it's an awesome song and it definitely deserved to get as big as it did.

An overrated song that radio put to good use long after its sales fell off by keeping its airplay high enough to minimize the introduction of other alternative songs to Top 40 radio. It's funny, when it rose to popularity so immediately after We Are Young, there were so many articles about the rise of alternative music, but instead, they've milked that song for all its worth to block the rise of subsequent alternative songs, including Gotye's.
As if that didn't bother me enough, these radio tactics make it impossible for Call Me Maybe, what I believe is clearly the bigger cultural phenomenon and the one that spent more weeks at #1 to take it down, even as it continues to hold on better with a fraction of the airplay. I've never experienced a song so bashed into oblivion by radio and for the wrong reasons. Everyone hates the song now here (which, admittedly, is a very hipster climate). That said, CMM has been chasing it down for ages worldwide so at least that's some consolation.
The concept of the song is executed well, though.
