People thinking it matters if she's gonna flop or not with this film. This is such a low-cost risk that could take Katy's career to places you wish your fave could.
Even if the movie doesn't make lots of profit, it's still doing wonders for her in the music department. Her album sales and single sales are exploding right now.
And the good criticism is also a great thing for her image.
People who call her a single artist with not a big Stan base... She still managed to bring in 10 million opening weekend.
This is such a milestone in her career and in no way an underachievement

Fixed
It is a $7.8M - $8.7M weekend.
Actually, I think her music department helps quite a lot on the movie. If she didn't deliver a good song like "Wide Awake". The movie will actually do worse. People are still more interested in her music than her own persona.
Someone please explain to me why this was a theatric release and not a VH1, MTV, or ABC release. Yes, I know it's in 3D, which is irrelevant. I know it's for the fans, but Katy doesn't exactly point herself out to be an interesting or complex individual. I guess they don't mind having it perform poorly?

Yeah I was gonna say, it only brought 3M on opening day, no?
Besides, it's a problem if people don't care enough about HER. That translates to no staying power.

Regardless, it's better than I would have thought lol.
But I agree, the public doesn't care about any of these pop girls personal lives as much as they would with Britney or Beyonce.
Katy doesn't have the same kind of fans the Jonas Brothers or Hannah Montana did. The Jonas Brothers movie dropped 77% in its second weekend and only ended up grossing $19.2m after grossing $12.5m in three days. The Hannah Montana concert movie dropped 67%. She won't drop as hard as those two movies. And it only cost $12 million.
Wow. I thought it would do like 5 mill, similar to Glee.
Anyways, this was still good for her, even if she doesn't make back the budget. She has broadened her fanbase, sold more albums, and WA has seen a bit more success.
Well, no one is surprised at these numbers, what did you expect? Personally, I thought it would flop hard, and it is actually doing decent. It is a movie about the pop star, no other pop star with this kind of a movie would make it much better (I think that Gaga's movie, for example, would make much less than this one about Katy).
Eh, I knew it was going to underperform anyway, which is why I'm not upset. I loved it, the critics loved it, and my friend who saw it gained a ton of respect for her after watching. That's all that matters to me. Slay Katy.
