No, "Candyman" isn't a lyrically deep song, but it was fresh and different for the time it was released. That whole album was exploring new territories for 2000s pop music, so clearly Linda was happy to be a part of it.

I said "For 2000s pop music". Obviously there were a lot of influences in that record that Christina didn't innovate or invent. But it was going against the grain of everything else in the time it was released. Much unlike Teenage Dream.

The main problem I have with Katy's songs is that they are too formulaic and not spontaneous/ creative enough. I think she has the capacity for brilliance, but much like her contemporaries she's content to settle for mediocrity. Why be brilliant when OK is more than good enough?

I'm not criticising you for being a snob, that would be hypocritical of me when I have been accused of much the same. Take it as a compliment.

Of course I understand why they are big hits, but that understanding doesn't cause me to warm me up to them at all.

Being formulaic is one of my issues with her (CG has to be the worst offender in years on that point), but even on the songs that aren't necessarily that (like Hot n' Cold/Teenage Dream) I'm still not a fan because I just find myself put off by her vocal delivery. I guess Katy and I just weren't meant to be.

I agree. Outside of TTWE I find most of the tracks on FF to be far more interesting production-wise, and Britney's vocal stylings tends to elevate the material rather than denigrate it.
