When I hear it on the radio, it does not sound different or experimental.

The problem with artists releasing ballads or something remotely different from the norm is that some people try to dismiss the music as "boring" or question why the music is successful because they are so used to the dance-pop sound that GaGa, Ke$ha and the like are popular for. Then this whole dumb argument about what's "real" music starts.
|
I. HATE. THAT. ARGUMENT!!! Whenever people want to get loud about a song being "boring" because it is slow, or because it is a ballad, i flip a ****. If the singing is strong, the lyrics are good, and the production is tight...I can be much more excited about a ballad than dance music. So much so that I usually listen to slower, ballady music when I need something to keep me awake on late night drives. There is just no ****ing recognition of talent with some people

I know that you did not say it was Hip-Hop! I was making a point that rap is mostly used as a form of vocals in Hip-Hop. So when someone does them in a *insertothergenrehere*, it doesn't make it any less *insertothergenrehere*. Rap is just vocals! Like singing or talking in a song! Bottom line there is NO Urban base in IGF, it's just Dance!

They are very generic, but the point is, they aren't following the dance-pop trend that is popular right now.

well we will see in 10/20 years or so bc right now we can't really tell since those vids just came out and everybody knows them, so there's no since in going over that I guess. *writes in calendar 10 years from now to talk to my bud MusicTalker about vids*

Do yall really think of Bruno's music as dance-pop? I personally love Bruno, and think he has mostly great lyrics, fresh production, and great vocals. I think more Brunos could help the situation, not make it worse.

No, his music is not anywhere near dance-pop. It's pop music, but it's not dance-pop at all.

...Yeah. The "different" songs on radio right now are Rolling In the Deep & could've been Run the World had it done better. California King Bed, if it ever receives good airplay, will be different for the current Top 40 environment, but that song isn't experimental or anything. Just a ballad among dancepop songs.

I don't think it's a matter of diversity as much as it's a matter of taste/quality,
And trust me kids, growing up in the 90s wasn't that much better.

R&B has most def. lost it's diversity.
When you look back to the 90s you had Brandy, Whitney, Mariah, Lauryn Hill, Mary J, Erykah Badu, Janet etc.
If you wanted to hear about love & heartbreak you had Mary & Brandy
If you wanted to hear something socially conscious you had Lauryn & Erykah Badu
If you wanted to hear a strong power ballad you had Whitney & Mariah.
If you wanted something Sensual and sexy there was Janet.
Now everytime I hear a R&B song it is either about poppin bottles in the club or the same ol sappy love song.
Then on top of that you had groups. There was Boyz II Men, Jodeci, Destiny's Child, En Vogue, TLC etc.
I thik R&b music is falling because no one has creativity anymore and instead of expanding there horizons they are jumping on bandwagons and doing what's hot at the moment.
|
Now THIS I will agree with. Contemporary R&B radio is GARBAGE, and has been so for YEARS. Truly, even though the 90s had its fair share of crap - R&B radio was in a much more different, experimental place then.

I disagree. You might can argue quality, which is subjective, but diversity is something totally different. You can't sit up here and say that one genre or sub-genre was dominant. There were multiple genres/sub-genres dominating radio and the Hot 100.

You need to learn how to speak to people on the internet.
This is unacceptable.

Bad Romance, Run the World (Girls), Rolling In the Deep (for Top 40 radio at least), Grenade (arguable), Use Somebody (arguable too - but it was one of the last rock songs all over radio for a long time).
