The delusion. It made sense for Bey to receive the award, especially when she's one of the most awarded VMA artists of all time. If we want to be technical and just straight petty, why are they giving it to one of the least awarded VMA artists of all time?

The VMAs has consistently awarded Bey for visual prowess over the entire course of her entire career. You can't question the parameters in which she received the Vanguard award without questioning the same for others.

Aside from Single Ladies, Beyoncé has twice (nearly three times) filmed videos for her entire album. The two times she has, they have been met with immense critical acclaim. The act of doing so has taken music video artistry to a new place and function.

A vanguard is more than just being iconic. A vanguard leads the way through new ideas, or advances forward their craft.

That is exactly what Beyoncé has done, aside from Single Ladies.
