..... To Have and Not Hold is nice but this album has proven to be a CHORE & a BORE. At least when I debate people on Madonna and they bring up RoL, I'll be able to go INNN on they ass. ****IN DEATH @ this MerGirl song sounding like Grandma Willow from Pocahontas. I ****IN CAN'T!!!!!!!!!



O/T: Christina studied Impossible Princess and Ray Of Light for the Bionic album......... I'm hearing too many similarities and influences. Christina is a great student of music yet a terrible business woman.

I gotta get into Kylie's discography but I highly doubt that Impossible Princess is her best.... her most creative, possibly and maybe Top 5 but not numero uno.

Mariah is a tricky subject...... depends on what style you like best from her and what era you identify the most with.

What a fantastic collection of albums! Just top-notch work from these ladies. I can't wait to see how it all shakes out in the countdown, especially since they're all so different from each other.

Impossible Princess: 8.5
This is definitely the most challenging record among the bunch, and it was easily my least favorite upon first listen. But with each repeated play, I felt more immersed in its harsh, atonal sonic landscape. I don't think I enjoy Impossible Princess so much as appreciate its artistry, but there are some really great songs here ("Breathe," "Through the Years," "Dreams"). Still, I don't know if I see myself returning to it much in the future.

Ray of Light: 8.62
Holy ****! This one is a work of complete genius in my book. Maybe it's the place I'm at in my life right now, but it really struck an emotional chord with me: I was totally bowled over by "Drowned World/Substitute for Love," and didn't quite come up for air until "Little Star." For me, Ray of Light is much more than the sum of its parts. As an album—in terms of the mood it creates and the meaning it evokes—it's almost perfection. I can see now why it was lauded as such an instant classic; this is among my favorite albums ever.

Butterfly: 8.58
The sequence from "Honey" to "Whenever You Call" is essentially flaw free—and then comes "Fly Away," by far the biggest misstep among any of these four works. It's sort of a "huh?!" moment (disco gospel in the middle of all this emotional balladry?), and the album doesn't quite recover. Nevertheless, Butterfly is a very strong collection of songs that really made me appreciate Mariah more as a songwriter and as a singer.

The Velvet Rope: 8.19
There's so much good stuff here ("Velvet Rope," "Got 'Til It's Gone," "Together Again," "Empty") and I was moved by the album's overall vibe, but Janet probably could have done a little bit of trimming to streamline the effect. ("Go Deep," for one, feels perhaps out of place). Her vulnerability and emotional honesty are very appealing—probably the strongest part of The Velvet Rope, though better than the music itself sometimes. I'm glad to have this side of Janet on record, but I'll probably stick with gal from Rhythm Nation and All From You.

These two are the singles and some fillers.

True Blue, Like a Prayer, Erotica, Music, Confessions, maybe Ray of Light... those are her best, and that's the truest tea.
