Gaga was already destroying the competition with The Fame. The Fame Monster just popped everyone's cherry and made them beg for more.

But, her place as the leader of the 90's teeny bop era, and role in the revival of pure teen pop music can't be denied.

I like Rihanna, but I'm sorry, she's not close to legendary status at all.
In my previous long post, I said a legend needs to bring more to the table than successful hits. They have to be MASSIVE that everyone and their mom knows and they have to bring something sort of unique and extra. What else does Rihanna offer besides the hits and some brand deals? Lots of artists have had the same thing. She has nothing memorable in terms of dancing. What can you honestly say people will dance to on Halloween or at talent shows 20 years from now like MJ's thriller or Beat it?
I'm not sure I can judge worldwide, as I haven't been over the world. It's hard to even say so here in Japan, when Gaga is literally everywhere, EVEN IN THE GROCERY STORE! Can't a girl get a cheeseburger without listening to "Im a bad kid.."

People know of her albums, but they are not arguably considered classics among the masses. She is fashionable but other than her hair styles, what fashion trends has she set? I honestly can't think of any. Rihanna has not had a breakout performance yet, whereas for Britney, Beyonce, and Gaga there are many.
|
Her AMA performance of OG/WMN/LTWYL was breakout in my opinion. And the trends she have set comes with her hair. That's what she's known for. How many trendsetters are known for their hair? It singles her out.

The Fame didn't put Gaga as high as GGGB put Rihanna in terms of status and being the it girl, The Fame Monster did.

Oh, well, I think that she can be on her way.
It's just the ~10 year milestone thing... I can't really place a timeline on Rihanna, she's in such a weird place and has her own niche in terms of popularity & appeal that she can't really be compared or measured to others.

Those things aren't denied, but the 90s teen-pop phase wasn't looked at in a good light anyway.

There's more to talent than a big voice, please recognize that and stop being so pressed.

I wouldnt say that. Her early performances have become so iconic and are still very much memorable. And the fact that she was able to come back as hard as she did after her breakdown only adds to her legacy.

Diana Ross was never a great performer, nor great singer nor great dancer yet she is a legend.

I thought she greatly improved with that performance, but it wasn't the once in a lifetime performance where everyone was talking about it the next day.

Not true at all. Britney has sold 5 times more records than Beyoncé and is 18 times more famous than her. Why do people keep saying they're the same?

|
If Rihanna wanted to become an icon, she could do so easily. She's built the foundation but she she seems comfortably plateauing. Becoming a much better live performer and finding a way to make an intimate connection with her fans and the public would do wonders for her, but i don't see either happening, unfortunately.

It was a massive craze though. Everyone wanted to be like Britney and every record label tried to craft their own version of her. Plus she is a worldwide icon.

To say that Gaga only gained her fame because she was the only pop star in 09? Weren't you all the same people denying that she started the dance pop craze and that Rihanna had already been doing it before? So Rihanna then was around and IN the scene as well.
I'd say Gaga's rise to fame was due to the pop hit and the trendy cool platinum blonde wig with a bow fashion style. Also, she was really humble and showed humility to her fans. That was back then.
I still think gaga will never be forgotten, but again, moreso for her antics than her music.

Which is arguable the only reason why Gaga is so big today. Just Dance & The Poker Face success didn't pick up till Disturbia was decreasing & had almost faded on the radio.

She has a great connection with her fans, her problem is that she changes way too much very fast, which gives her a flip flop fanbase, her fans 1 second are here next second are not because every era she changes dramatically the looks and the music and most pop listeners are not here for change (see Lady Gaga now, losing plenty of fans) pop music fans are self indulgent .

And she got me as a fan just in 2008, just like Britney, Beyoncé, Gaga, Rihanna, Katy, etc probably made one or two fans in the last 3 months in the whole world that was not exactly my point.

I don't see any scenario where Gaga follows-up Paparazzi (which had gained her a lot of respect/new fans) with BR and the latter doesn't become the smash it was, especially with that video.
Even if Rihanna had put out Only Girl at the same time instead of Russian Roulette, it's not like pop music is SUCH a zero-sum game where there's only room for one success story.
