“MUSE” is Miliyah's first album out of two to feature in the top albums of 2014. This album is a celebration marking the 10th anniversary of Miliyah's musical career. The album features a mixture of cover versions of other artists, duets and several remixes of Miliyah’s older material. Each track on this album are J-pop gems that are put together to make a memorable album and one of Miliyah’s best.
BEST TRACKS: 1. Fighter (Mika Nakashima x Miliyah Kato, DRIVE (featuring JASMINE), I’ll be there with you (featuring AI & Thelma Aoyama), M.U.S.E
WORST TRACKS: BLUE FLAME (featuring SUGAR SOUL).
# 12 | 2NE1 - "CRUSH"
A great comeback album from 2NE1. I was anticipating this album for ages while they slowed down with promotions. It's a very good album, much better than the digital singles they released prior to this. I wanted so many tracks on this album to feature promotional videos, but unfortunately we only got three new videos (well we got a Japanese CRUSH, so I guess it counts as four new ones).
BEST TRACKS: Gotta Be You, Happy, Crush, Come Back Home
WORST TRACKS: (No terrible tracks)
# 11 | AAA - "GOLD SYMPHONY"
AAA’s albums are one I anticipate each year even though they never rank in my top 5 albums of the year. The reason for this is possible due to the lack of tracks and how some tracks are assigned to different members of the group such as ‘V.O.L’ which strongly focuses on Hidaki’s singing vocals which we rarely hear in any AAA song. Their singles tend to be the stronger songs on the album and in this era, the singles haven’t been superb. However “Next Stage” one of my favourite tracks of the year is ground-breaking and the album has other hidden gems such as “Hands” which sounds alike to their 'Buzz Communication' era.
BEST TRACKS: Next Stage, Kaze Ni Kaoru Natsu no Kioku, HANDs, V.O.L (Voice of Love)
WORST TRACKS: autumn orange
2NE1
These four girls have really made their comeback this year. From the word 'go' to them kick-starting their promotions for CRUSH, they have delivered fantastic music and stunning visuals. "Gotta Be You" is one of my favorite tracks from them which never ages despite the high play count. "Happy" was a great uplifting track which featured all of the girls take a step away from other harder hitting concepts such as "Come Back Home". After the controversies later that year, I am not sure what the future holds for the group. CL will begin to promote new material in the west which will be extremely exciting.
BEST EASTERN GROUP
AARON YAN
Aaron Yan was originally part of mega-selling Taiwanese group Fahrenheit, however he later embarked on a solo career. This year he has released two considerably well selling EP's, 'Drama' and 'Cut'. Although neither of them have ranked in my album chart, they're still great records that demonstrate his capability of becoming a huge solo male artist. I am looking forward to hearing more solo material from Aaron.
#30 | Hyuna - "Red" - Incredible concept which surprised me when it sounded so good! Definitely one of the most memorable videos and songs of 2014.
#29 | Koda Kumi - "SHOWTIME" -It's been a while since Koda Kumi made amazing pop songs like this. She sings great in this track and her promotional video and choreography supports this song well.
#28 | a-MEI - "Faces of Paranoia" - My favorite track from her The song is sung with so much emotion and the whole concept of the video connotes this song as a strong social message.
#27 | SHINee - "Colorful"- SHINee started my 2014 with so much cheerfulness with 'Colorfu'. It's an upbeat pop song with a cute charm on it.
#26 | 2NE1 - "Gotta Be You" - My favorite song from 'CRUSH'. It's a powerful track sung over a catchy melody.
#25 | Jolin Tsai - "PLAY" - I was so excited about this track. It feels inspired by Western dance music, however Jolin pulls this off as if she owns it I love the dubstep dance break
#24 | Girl's Day - "Darling" - I pretty much predicted this would sound like a cute summery bop, before it was even released . It is their best song this year though. Extremely catchy. Hyeri's part
#23 | INFINITE - "Last Romeo" - The sweetune production in this song is outstanding The group sing so well in this song as well. Love the while rock vibe going down.
#22 | Lea Michele - "Cannonball" - Great solo debut song. I always compare her music to Demi, however this is one song which has some sort of unique twist on it.
#21 | Hyosung - "Good-night Kiss" - Officially the BEST song by a K-pop solo artist in 2014 . I never expected for Hyosung's solo material to be so good. Great K-pop song.
